In case you may have missed it, the Miami Heat will be without one of their best players to begin the 2025-26 season.
Earlier this month, guard Tyler Herro underwent left foot surgery that is expected to sideline him for roughly the next two months. Herro, 25, spoke to the media for the first time since the surgery during media day on Monday, opening up about how the injury took place the thought process behind undergoing surgery days before the start of training camp.
“I was working out in Miami-Dade in the middle of July,” he recalled. “I was doing my warmup and I felt like a crazy pinch in my foot out of nowhere. It was very random. We didn’t know what it was, so I got an MRI, nothing showed up on the MRI. And then foot specialist said I was born with an extra bone in the back of my foot, and it’s like a very small bone.
“We did a [Platlet-Rich Plasma] shot, cortisone shot, another PRP shot. So we tried everything before surgery. Ultimately, it was two, three weeks in-between each shot — from July to now — it adds up and we got to a week ago, and I was like, ‘Bro, I still feel the same pinch in my foot that I felt in July.’ Ultimately, I was working out and I was trying to ramp up and be ready to go for training camp, but there was no way I was going to be able to play through that pinch … I couldn’t even jump.”
Herro told reporters Monday that he told Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra that he’s aiming to be back in six weeks, though an 8-to-12 timeline is more realistic despite being ahead of schedule.
Spoelstra also stated that Herro will return, “sooner rather than later,” according to the Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang.
Thus, it’s possible that the seventh-year guard will be back by Thanksgiving-ish.
The 6-foot-5 guard had the best season of his career last year, averaging 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists on 60.5 percent true shooting. He (unexpectedly) assumed the role as the Heat’s lead creator, making his first All-Star team despite an uninspiring four-game trek in the playoffs.
There’s no doubt the Heat will miss his offense to start the season. Miami did bring in Norman Powell to take some of the pressure off him, in addition to bringing back Davion Mitchell and Dru Smith, among others.
