Terry Rozier arrested by FBI in Orlando amid federal gambling probe

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested by the FBI in Orlando, Fla., in relation to the federal gambling investigation the NBA launched in January, investigative journalist Pablo Torre first reported early Thursday morning.

Rozier, 31, did not play in Wednesday’s season opener against the Orlando Magic.

Rozier has been directly linked to a federal gambling investigation after a professional bettor allegedly placed a total of 30 wagers on Rozier’s unders for points, rebounds and assists in a March 23, 2023, game when he was with the Charlotte Hornets. He finished with just five points, four rebounds and two assists and left after 10 minutes with a foot issue.

Initially, there was no conclusive evidence found by the NBA or investigators that Rozier was part of any wrongdoing. Though Thursday’s arrest appears to suggest otherwise.

The Heat acquired the 6-foot-1 guard in January of 2024 in exchange for Kyle Lowry and a 2027 lottery-protected first-round pick. He is coming off the worst season of his career in 2024-25. Rozier averaged 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting just 39.1 percent from the floor and 29.5 percent from 3-point range.

There has been no official announcement, but it can be assumed that Rozier will likely be suspended by either the team or the league until further notice.

According to the Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman in July, a league-wide suspension would “afford the Heat salary-cap and luxury tax relief of 50% of the salary lost during a suspension.” Rozier is on the books for $26.6 million ($24.9 million guaranteed) this season, the final year of his current contract, according to Spotrac.

Excerpt from FANSIDED
“Erik Spoelstra’s stubborn mistake will doom the Heat’s season before it beginsAt some point, Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is going to have to trust Kel’el Ware. Otherwise, the decision to continue to play absurdly small is going to continue to haunt the Heat’s frontcourt. That’s exactly what we saw in the season-opener, as the lack of size cost the Heat dearly down the stretch.

I wouldn’t go all the way to suggest that rebounding was the only issue that doomed the Heat on opening night, but the four offensive rebounds at the end of the game weren’t ideal. The fact that the Heat were getting bullied in the frontcourt as the lead was quickly evaporating while their prized athletic 7-footer was riding the bench was not a good look.

And if Spo doesn’t want to lose the season before it even gets off the floor, he needs to break out of his natural stubbornness. It’s time for Spo to trust Ware and the rest of this young core.”

People often wonder whether scandals like this will mess up things long after the day they happen. Well, a pretty embarrassing thing happened to the Stanley Cup winning Panthers last season. Aaron Ekblad got busted for steroids and when he came back from suspension in the playoffs, pretty much all was forgiven.
I’m sorry for Terry and I hope he beats the rap. But, as a fan, I do see the silver lining as Terry may or may not have gotten his mojo back, and we can use that money to get a backup center, and maybe one better than Precious as Precious was, at least in his limited preseason minutes, underwhelming. Still, he is better than nothing for sure and may have grown into his role..
Anyway, staying within the cap is a big deal for this ownership now, for good reasons. It has dictated several moves this offseason. Now, maybe some good can come out of this and the money it frees up..

The chances of ANY TEAM playing a 2-way contract player the first game of the season are slim to none. Nah, that’s too generous. I’d say zero chance.

There is always a lot of people trying to take advantage from NBA level players.

I assume, that especially those growing poor in neighbourhood with a lot of crime has friends or know people with criminal pedigree.

Maybe there was just a pressure from old friend, connected with criminals, to make a buck or two with internal information. And everything went out of control.

He is done in NBA. And Heat is done with him.

Is that actually good or bad?
Does anybody knows that?

I know Heat can get a replacement player, but I think not via trade, only in free agency.
Wouldnt it be better to trade him next year as expiring contract?

He is an expiring contract this season. The Heat should get either his full salary wiped off or half his salary, depending on what happens from here.

Yes, I know, but his expiring contract could be valuable to somebody looking for salary damp. closer to the end of contract, more valuable. Could we get another player in his place?

I believe his contract will be voided. I think from this point forward, his contract is not tradable unless the charges are dropped. It doesn’t appear that that’s going to happen.

So possibly $12 million, if that is correct. We could absolutely resign Precious and be a major player on buyout market.

Unless he’s found to be innocent, I imagine at least that much. It’d be nice if the full $26m became available. This is why I argued vehemently against waiving him this offseason. I hoped he would be cleared and become a contributor but, if he was involved, the team would get relief that it wouldn’t get if they waived or stretched him.

This might become the #1 most bizarre way to get cap relief surpassing Anthony Carter’s agent forgetting to fax in his contact.

Sorry to hear about Rozier and Billups. Very stupid if true. This may change a lot of things. Maybe Heat will soon be able to acquire a big and a closer before all is said and done.

I would have to see the numbers, but it’s reasonable to think we could resign Precious and also have some money left for the buyout market.

This is just sad. Maybe there’s a deeper reason behind…can’t reconcile the thought that one is already earning millions and yet decided to gamble by purposely losing a game? Or games?

Too bad for Terry. Hope he gets fair treatment and his day in court. Having said that, the evidence that was presented was pretty damning and while I was happy he was exonerated by the league, I did wonder why.
The biggest mistake we ever made, the one that led most to our current mediocrity, was trading for Lowry. Now that guy sits on the bench in Philly still getting paid wildly inappropriately. And the consequences of us having to get rid of him, another quiet quitter just like his promoter, will be felt by this franchise long after he’s gone.

No wonder he didn’t get in the game last night. 😛

Now that we have clarity on his situation, what happens with that contract? We need a backup big.

Good luck, Terry. Sheesh

Never mind. I’m an idiot who didn’t read the last part. So I would bet the Heat are already calling up agents of various available big men, probaly a Precious resigning.

Lucky for you that decision is being made from your couch. Precious is still out of a job and he understands the business side of the tax and his contract at that time.

If Pat called you and offered you a million dollars, but your job would be to write every day how great Spo, Riley, Jovic, and Herro are and how much you miss Duncan, you would be at the arena to sign the contract faster than Usain Bolt!
Now if he offered me a million dollars to write every day how great and knowledgeable you are, I’d have to say no. Lying like that would set a bad example for my kids. 😆

I like precious, but he is not the answer. With Mitchell playing so well, it seems as though Herro, a filler and a pick could get us a good return or two.
