Norman Powell seeks extension as strong start boosts Heat offense

Just weeks into the 2025-26 NBA season, what Norman Powell has provided in his very short Miami Heat tenure has been a breath of fresh air.

The 32-year-old was acquired by the Heat last July as an additive piece to help a dormant Heat offense climb out of a well. Through the early part of the season, Powell has more than provided that, averaging 25.5 points on 47.8 percent shooting, including a scorching 46.1 percent from 3-point range.

Much like how savvy bettors seek value through top-tier Online betting apps, Powell has quickly emerged as a high-upside addition whose impact exceeds the initial investment. We’re working with a microscopic sample amid Tyler Herro’s injury, but Powell’s been the team’s primary catalyst when he’s been on the floor — alongside Bam Adebayo and third-year forward Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Jaquez was also one of five Heat players who were extension eligible heading into this season. Since he’s in the final year of his deal, he still is. And according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, he’s hoping one eventually gets done.

“I love it here. I love everything about the Heat,” Powell said, according to Chiang. “I loved them before. They were on my list before I signed my extension in Portland. I wanted to come here and play for the Heat. So I’m excited. I like the culture. I like what they have going on here. I like the mentality and the approach. I feel like they take guys to the next level. They push them past their own expectations, they have high standards. And I always like being around people that have high aspirations and high goals for themselves. It fits who I am, so I want to be here. Hopefully they feel the same way. … Hopefully everybody appreciates my presence and we’ll be able to get something done. But, yeah, I want to be here.”

In addition to his 25.5 points, Powell is averaging 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals. Everything he’s produced has been within the flow of the offense and not forced. When he’s not spotting up from deep, he’s been a great connector and decision-maker in the half-court, while generating plenty of paint touches and getting to the free-throw line and hitting them at an elite 93.2 percent clip.

Reports surfaced in early September that the Heat were “open” to considering extending Powell, depending on how the start of the season went. Miami is currently 8-6 with the NBA’s No. 14-ranked offense and No. 16 defense.

The 10-year veteran is only eligible for a three-year, $77 million extension, at the time of this publishing. But once his six-month deadline with team clears, he will be eligible for a $129 million extension over four years. The Heat didn’t extend Tyler Herro this offseason and also must decide whether or not it should extend Andrew Wiggins, who’s also in the final year of his current deal.

Kind of balances out since Heat were without Bam and Herro.

It will. Just wait. Herro, Bam and a quality big. Fo-ged-abow-ded…

But some won’t wait. In fact, it seems we are being set up for one to jump on the negative bandwagon should they lose the next game. The glass half empty mentality.

Another astute, revealing headline from AUCH…
Heat’s regret in drafting Kasparas Jakucionis grows as Hugo Gonzalez impresses.
For the record, Gonzalez stats so far are 3/2/.06. Yeah, the Heat are cursing the darkness over this egregious error.
Good grief.

Powell is our best player in that he can score in crunch time at the highest rate, can get our most difficult and important buckets to get. His game in the other areas is solid too across all axises. Having said that, he is a notch below superstar as he can be stopped more frequently than the stars. His good plays out weigh his bad 5 or 6-1, while a superstar is more like 7 or 8 to 1. So, if it was my decision to make, I pay him readily as there is no situation where Norm isn’t a valuable player to have.

Absolutely! He’s a keeper. The sooner they extend his contract, the better.

Powell: “But, yeah, I want to be here.” As opposed to ‘trade me anywhere, as long as it’s out of Miami’. Which turned out to be a lie, of course.

Not necessarily. 69 Mets, 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team David and Goliath to name a few.

No brainer. Extend the man’s contract for 3 years/$77M before the price goes up to 4 years/&129. Better player than Wiggins Jaquez deserves as much or more than Jovic. It would be a shame to lose him to another team.

He’s pretty reliable. He’s played under 50 games only twice after his rookie season. He’s played 60 or more games in 7 seasons.

He deserves it can be the anchor and veteran presence on the team for those 3 years. In the meantime, the guy who was insistent that we give quitter $50-60m a year on a 2 year extension (give your ss ANYTHING he wants!). Despite quitter
missing games the last 2-3 years, he now is hesitant to give Powell (a hard working, down to earth, non disruptive player) an extension. LOL!

youve seen him play 10 games looks great what about the previous 10 years whats his injury history.its the age factor .not many guys playing at high level at age 33 34 35 .hes our best player yes but hes 32 at his peak and jimmys peak jimmy way better player.jimmy made other players better norm not as much.playoff jimmy top 5 player last decade.norm in playoffs?btw i cant stand jimmy now but give credit where credit is due.does norm get us to two finals no

I don’t judge players on 10 games, or 1 game, or 1 season like you do. His 10 year history? Lol, maybe if you had looked that up, you wouldn’t have written that. He’s been a solid player. Of course he’s not as good, but he also makes 2/3 less money. At that price, he’s a much better value. Deserved to be an all star last season. He certainly seems to be a team player to me. And there you go with your speculation based on nothing. How do you know Powell won’t help us get to the finals? Let me help you – you don’t. But you have also said you think this team can compete in the East this season. With Bam, Herro, and maybe one additional player, I think it’s possible.
And I’ve already given quitter the credit he is due several times. But, as opposed to what you’ve said, I don’t miss him. He now has started at GS with his stupid haircut routine.

okc 14 1 wembys still growing joker best player in the world .all those teams have bonafide ss who can get u jewelry we have lots good players but unfort to have a parade a ss or two is needed..in the east this year i believe we can win it.but versus okc i give us a 1% chance to win that series.if u add a ss to this team goes up quite a bit maybe 40% chance.we’re close just a ss away.norms not a ss pretty sure hes never been all star

You are correct, he’s never been an all star, though that could change this season. I agree with the rest of your comment. You can also look at Detroit who now has that ss Duncan something I think his name is. 😆

3 years is the ideal contract term. Enough but not too long in regards to his age. And the value is excellent if we compare it with other players.
