Heat get upset by Mavericks on the road, lose 118-108

Despite facing a 12th seed and struggling 7-15 Dallas Mavericks squad heading into the night, the Miami Heat were defeated with a final score of 118-108 on the road. After going on a six-game winning streak, Miami has now lost two of their last three games and have dropped to a 14-8 record overall.

Norman Powell was sidelined for this one due to an ankle sprain, and his efficient scoring was missed in a night where Miami shot just 40% from the field. They also tied their season-low in pace on the night— it was one of the slowest games this year for a Heat offense that is ranked top-three in points per game and first in pace.

Tyler Herro attempted to keep the offense afloat early on, totaling 21 points in the first half on 10 of 14 shooting. The problem? He scored a whopping zero points in the second half.

The Mavericks defense started to blitz Herro following halftime, essentially removing him from the game similar to the Cleveland Cavaliers strategy last postseason. And with Powell being out, there was no backup plan to get easy offense going. Miami attempted to run some offense through Andrew Wiggins, although Wiggins put up one of his worst performances of the year.

He shot a rough 4 of 18 from the field, finishing with just 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware each played well for Miami, but oddly enough, both only played under 30 minutes. There wasn’t nearly enough Adebayo-Ware frontcourt duo minutes together, as Ware remained in a bench role in favor of Pelle Larsson. Adebayo dropped 21 points and 7 rebounds on over 50% shooting in 28 minutes. Ware bounced back from a quiet outing in the Heat’s previous game with a dominant 22/10 double-double on a near-perfect 8 of 11 from the field. He was also 4 of 5 from 3-point range, and added one block and one steal.

In even more concerning news, Nikola Jovic remained disappointing in his opportunities off the bench. The Mavs outscored Miami by 8 points in his minutes, and he had zero points with essentially no impact at all before coach Erik Spoelstra took him out for the rest of the night after just six minutes of play. Jovic has looked lost and unplayable this season, despite being viewed as a potential X-factor after securing a four-year contract extension with the Heat before the start of the season.

Dallas had seven players score in double-digits, going 51% from the field and 50% from deep overall as a team. They were led by Cooper Flagg’s 22 points on route to their upset victory.

Miami will aim to pick up another bounce back win Friday night in Orlando versus the Magic.

The Heat just had two games where they had polar extremes of making or missing threes. They had a one in ten night of making them followed by a one in ten night of missing them. And, it’s obvious that some of that is due to the variations in shooting on different floors or just different nights. But, some of the difference is associated with quality of the looks we are getting. The night we played the Clippers we got just gotten all our players back together and were playing optimally. The second night we were only missing one player really, but it was a player of significance, our number one shot creator.
This is a discussion of the Heat’s roster and the ability to create your own shot, a skill maybe only five to ten percent of the players in the league fully have, and others can’t at all and some fall in between, as they can with the right situation. Which usually means there are other shot creators on the floor for the defense to worry about or the defense didn’t have time to get set, which is part of our strategy this year.
Now, shot creation ability is not the only skillset needed to be an effective nba player, as some other roles are just as important. Some players can create their own shot but give up a lot on defense or rebounding, or they aren’t good at dealing dimes. But, my contention is you need at least two full shot creators on the floor at all times, and ideally, another player who can do it if defenses are too concerned elsewhere.
On the Heat, we have three true shot creators, our best being Norm, and close behind is Ty. Our third shot creator, and there’s some drop off, is Bam, not as good as the other two, but still truly able to find and make his own shot, if necessary.
Then, in the next tier are Wiggins, our third or fourth option. He can almost always create his own shot and will make a decent percentage of them if there are other shot creators in the floor. When he becomes the primary option, like during several minutes last night, he sometimes doesn’t finish too well. Next, is Jaime, whose highway is only open if the defense isn’t set or it’s preoccupied with others. If the defense has time to get organized, Jaquez can’t penetrate. Davion really can get his own shot a little better than Jaime, but doesn’t try often enough to be considered a true shot creator as he concentrates on assists more. After that, Dru will surprise you at times, but he doesn’t often try to get inside. Pelle, can do it a bit, but most of his effectiveness is in drawing fouls.
After that, it’s pretty rare for the reserves. Even Ware, as invaluable as he is at other aspects of the game, is usually not a shot creator- perhaps he will gain that skill to some degree later. Simone is pretty limited to the Dunc fake a three and then roll to the rim move. Niko tries to penetrate, usually without the desired results.
Anyway, the point I’m making is we need another shot creator to have two on the court at all times, especially if we don’t have the true superstar. The comeback mounted by the Clippers, slicing 25 points or so off our lead, was made during a time when we had little shot creation ability on the floor. And last night, everyone but Ty and Ware, (who doesn’t need to create his own shot to score, and oddly, made some threes), played inefficiently, because the defense didn’t have multiple players to worry about.
One more trade is needed, and the player we get needs to be a two water who can create his own shot, at least a little.

Trap game…glad did not watch it. Though looking good still this season and after 22 games they’re better than what I have guessed at the start. There will be bumps like this one maybe legs and arms got tired from shooting the lights out the previous game.

Good to hear from you Manila. It seems to me you were away for awhile.
I heard this game referred to as a trap game a couple times last night. I wonder why, it just seemed like a regular game.
We couldn’t shoot last night, going to happen every ten games or so and you almost always lose when it does. Not sure there is anything more to it. It does show how much Norm means to the team. A few others had rough nights, in some part because they forced shots because Norm wasn’t there and the threes weren’t going, but they will be back.
It does also show what I have been saying, we are a B team now, fairly good, but still need one more transaction or there will be occasional disappointing nights like last night, especially if a top player is hurt. I hope we are buyers at the deadline if not sooner.

Got sick. Me and my kid. And got sooooo busy after that coz a lot of projects got stalled. Just getting glimpses of Heat games the past week. But im happy with the way our boys are playing. I got them at 11-9 (or was it 12-8?) start of season and they exceeded that. Trap game coz Mavs on paper are good but injuries derailed them plus cold shooting Heat + no Norm so recipe for a loss.
