GAME PREVIEW: Heat travel to Orlando to play in-state rival Magic

The Miami Heat will get Norman Powell back, at the cost of Tyler Herro likely being out, in their matchup against the Magic in Orlando on Friday.

After the Miami Heat looked to finally be hitting their stride of a six-game winning streak, they have now lost two out of their last three games. This includes their previous disappointing loss against the struggling Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

Tyler Herro’s return to the lineup has caused for some inconsistent Heat rotations, compared to the group that was out there for the first 17 games of the season. However, Miami will likely be without Herro once again for tonight’s road matchup versus the in-state rival Orlando Magic.

Herro is listed as doubtful with a toe injury. Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported that he would be undergoing an MRI for this sudden setback. The Heat’s reigning All-Star guard has just gotten back to game action after offseason ankle surgery sidelined him to begin the 2025-26 season.

The good news is that Norman Powell will return after missing the Mavericks game with an ankle sprain. Paolo Banchero will make his return for Orlando as well, as he was sidelined for several weeks with his own injury. Miami lost to the Magic in their season opener, and will now get to rematch. Both teams are 7-3 in their last 10 games and are separated by just one game in the Eastern Conference standings.

If we drew up a plan for Herro titled ‘steps you can take to keep lowering your value’, this would be the way. Already with an oft injured reputation, he waits until just before training camp to get his surgery, and now, 2 weeks after returning, is injured again. He should not be offered $50m per season. Or $40m. Or even $30m. If he expects more than what he is making now, the team should just let his contract expire and he can try his luck on the open market.

Orlando is playing better without Banchero than with him…kind of like the Heat without Herro.

  • In its first 17 games, the Heat scored under 115 points only three times. In the five games since Herro’s return, they’ve already done it three additional times and are 3-2 in those games.
  • In the first 17 games, the Heat were playing at the fastest pace in the league and were averaging more than 106 possessions per game. They were also #1 in the league in most points per game (124.9).
  • In the five games since Herro’s return, Miami has dropped to third in the league in pace averaging 103.9 possessions per game and has dropped to 10th in points per game (119).
  • The Heat’s new faster-paced offensive system has nearly eliminated Herro’s playmaking. Without the usage rate that he’s accustomed to and without the help of screen-actions, Herro’s playmaking has nearly disappeared.
  • Even though Miami is still averaging the most team assists per game in the league, Herro has had more than two assists in only one of the five games he has played, including no assists at all in two of them. Meanwhile, Mitchell, the team’s starting PG, has picked up much of the slack (7.8 assists per game).
  • Since Herro’s return, opposing teams have begun exploiting his defensive deficiencies as Cleveland did in the 2025 playoffs.
  • If Herro is not the playmaker he’s been in the past and has not improved his defense, it significantly changes his overall value to the Heat. Powell brings a lot of what Herro does in terms of scoring, especially with the way he has played through the first month of this season. He is also a better defender.
  • The primary differences between Herro and Powell were Herro’s elevated playmaking skills and Powell’s less porous defense. If Herro can’t maximize his playmaking skill in the Heat’s new offensive system and continues to be exploited because of his defensive deficiencies, the handwriting may be on the wall about his future with the team.
  • One other important factor to keep in mind is that Powell’s contract can be extended for 3/$77M. Meanwhile, Herro is currently eligible for 4 year/$207M extension and a 5 year/$380MSupermax contract if he makes an All-NBA team in 2025-2026.

Now may be the perfect time for Riley to put his feelers out around the league to explore interest in a trade package that includes Herro, and other assets, in exchange for a disgruntled ss (such as Antetokounmpo).
