The Miami Heat returned to the win column on Sunday evening, handling the visiting New Orleans Pelicans with a final score of 125-106.
The Heat have now won five of their last six games and will improve to a 20-16 record. They are now tied for the sixth seed, .5 games back of fifth and 1.0 game behind fourth. New Orleans dropped to 8-29 on the season in the loss.
Norman Powell led all scorers with a stellar 34-point eruption to go along with nine made 3-3pointers, two steals and 11 of 15 shooting overall.
The veteran guard continues to make his case to secure a first-time All-Star honors. Miami outscored the Pelicans by 23 points in Powell’s minutes, tied for the second-best plus-minus on the team with Bam Adebayo and Pelle Larsson.
Adebayo still struggled offensively, going for just 12 points on 5 of 14 shooting, but he still impacted the game defensively and added 6 rebounds and assists, each. Kel’el Ware continues to be effective alongside Adebayo in the starting frontcourt, finishing with a 16 points and 12 rebounds double-double in 25 minutes. That duo held New Orleans’ Zion Williamson to just 12 points on the night.
Tyler Herro was available but didn’t hit the court
Prior to tip-off, it was announced that Tyler Herro was indeed upgraded to available, but did not play as part of his ramp up with conditioning to return from 13 straight missed games with his toe injury. The expectation is that he will make the upcoming road trip with Miami and is still day-to-day— but getting closer.
“He’s been putting in a lot of work. He’s getting closer. This is just more to get the mindset ready for the next step. He’ll be traveling with us, but he’s still day-to-day. I don’t have an exact date when he’ll be ready.”
— Erik Spoelstra on Tyler Herro (via Anthony Chiang)
Off the bench tonight, Nikola Jovic added 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Jovic’s confidence has re-emerged as of late, as the fourth-year forward is starting to carve out a consistent role in the second unit for coach Erik Spoelstra. Additionally, Larsson also chipped in 16 points in impactful bench minutes after returning from an ankle injury.
The Heat came out to a quick start offensively, dropping 43 points alone in the opening period. They finished the game shooting an efficient 46% as a team and 41% from deep. And they got it done on both ends— being active in the passing lanes leading to easy offense with a 19-8 steals advantage overall.
The next game will be Tuesday in a rematch against the Minnesota Timberwolves, opening a four-game road trip.

good thing they’re not tired from yesterday’s loss. if they are “ramping up” Tyler he should’ve at least got 10min pt vs a lottery team. my guess is Heat avoiding re-injuring that toe or another injury as Pat preps Herro for a trade.
Probably
Larsson contributed 16 points, three rebounds, six assists and three steals in his return. He also posted a quality plus/minus of plus 23 in 26 minutes off the bench.
Jovic also made a big impact, finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks in 26 minutes. He was especially impressive early on, recording 13 points, two rebounds and one steal in seven first-quarter minutes
The youth movement continues!
Yes, those guys, Niko and Pelle, recent successes has made me reconsider a lot of things. And, with Jaimie also, as he is approaching 6MOY status, it has made me feel better about our draft picks, as we are getting good rotational guys for our mid round choices. And Ware, in his first round position, and Pelle, in his second round, seem to be particularly savvy choices. It bodes well for Kaspar too.
Having said that, I still have overall team building, how they mesh together as a unit, concerns. As Sebastian Maniscalco might say, “They’re not supposed to doooo that.” And, none but possibly Ware, are starter level on really good teams, although Jaimie and Pelle are close. That’s the price we pay for never being in the lottery. It’s going to be fascinating to watch it play out.
True. They don’t get high draft picks so they need a good strategic trade like the Powell one.
Herro has averaged 23.2 points per game on 50.5 percent shooting from the field, 40.5 percent shooting from three-point range and 92.3 percent shooting from the foul line in his six appearances this season. The Heat is 3-3 in the six games that Herro has played in.
Watta bum!
hes played 6 games. watta stud ive always said a fresh ty about as good as it gets offensively.when his legs are fresh hes hard to stop.limit his minutes hes much more effective.he eventually gets worn down gets hurt.so yes hes useless in the real season.guys body cant hold up .
Not 6 games, 4 years. But, yeah, needs to show up in the playoffs. However, last playoffs, the Cavs knew if they stopped him, they would win, so they threw doubles and other schemes against him.
21/5/5,
20/5/5,
21/5/5,
24/5/5
He couldn’t get by dean wade or ty Jerome lmao ion wanna hear nothing about him getting doubled in the playoffs great players figure it out. You posting 20 point games like he did something lmao for his career in the playoffs he’s avg is 14 ppg
Yes, he has proved nothing in the playoffs. Those aren’t 20 point games, however, they are 20 point seasons. I never said he is a great player. He isn’t.
props to norm what were the clippers thinking ,now if we can only get kawhi id think we could win it all hes that good.i think pat and balmer are close friends,
He usually gets hurt before the playoffs. Need a player who will be around a while. The team should be getting younger not older.
he wasnt with toronto.norms shelf life maybe 3 years.norms a stud u pair him with kawhi and bam or ware one has to go for kawhi.ill take my chances for a parade in july.players like pelle jjj jovic nice complimentary players.they need to be paired with all star type players and a ss for jewelry.our younger players are not d wade type players maybe dam magerleigh type players.ware has a chance to be a diff maker.but hes so passive at times.he needs to get some swedish blood in him.
So, assume you could take on his 2 years. It is nice in the abstract, but the NBA is a business. How do you trade for his $50m salary? Would the Clippers take Herro, Rozier’s salary, and a pick? Probably not. They’d want Ware, or Jaquez as well.
for kawhi they can have one.kawhi leonard single handedly can get us a parade.hes that good .if he can get us to meet this summer i never have to meet u again?or maybe youd want to meet me again next summer
I would not give up either one. Maybe add Wiggins to the mix. They’d could flip him for a first if they want. As for meeting you, I’m sure you believe it would be one of the highlights of my life. My toes are tingling just thinking about it.
Powell should be an all-star this year AND he should get a healthy contract extension. A lot cheaper than extending Herro.
Smith, Herro, Larsson, Jaquez and Jovic should be able to do some damage. Oh wait, that can’t possibly work…too many white sides.
i prefer kas over dru.5 white crew as opposed to two live crew.
The Washington Generals
Like minds think alike. I hadn’t even seen your comment.
The Washington Generals of the NBA
And that is where my concerns really do exist. It would be nice if those five could be competitive. In a perfect world they could as they are good players. But, your in pretty uncharted waters since 1960. I don’t have the answers but perhaps we might find out.
im waiting for that all white lineup i loved the 60s.long hair woodstock peace, great music those were the days 30.
That was the only movement for me. It was the only time where it was cool to be different and weirdness was celebrated. And the concept of, “hung up old Mr. Normal”, along with the social values and lifestyles he represented, was to be questioned. I still have a little of that subversive nature somewhere deep inside even though the yuppy movement pretty much beat it out of me. Let your freak flag fly!
still wear my hair long.wife drives me crazy about that but as neil young says never gonna cut my hair.rock on 30.rock and sports the way i ride.all rileys whities team takes me back to my party days long time ago.30 flashbacks of black and white television our second teamers
I believe that was David Crosby
your right
As usual, haha
Funny that David Crosby song came up because it was one of the two times that I know of that the expression freak flag, which I referenced earlier, came up. The other person to use that expression was Jimi Hendrix.
I’ll tell you a little story about my life. At Beach High marijuana and recreational drug use hit in 1968. And our school took to it pretty well, a fairly good percentage, maybe 50%. (I’m just saying what it seemed like, I have no evidence to back this up) were at least occasional partakers. And, yet we were a school that almost all got good grades, got into some of the best colleges in America, and a lot of them became very successful in their fields. Anyway, back to the story, I spent a lot of weekends, particularly in 1969, partying and experimenting, and some of the places we went to a lot at night were Fairchild Gardens, Goony Golf- a mini golf course, a trampoline place in North Miami Beach, the World, which was a music and dancing place in North Miami, a Go Kart racing place, and the best place of all, Thee Image on 183rd Street and Collins, a converted bowling alley with day glo paint all over the walls. I saw some great bands there like Canned Heat, Spirit, and Led Zepellin, just after the Whole Lotta Love/Dazed and Confused album came out. Those years were so much fun. By 1970 I had turned over a new leaf, didn’t do drugs anymore, and got straight A’s, just in time to get into a good college.
Sounds like you graduated from high school the same year I did. I was 2,000+ miles away in AZ border town where weed, alcohol and anything else you wanted was plentiful. I moved to L.A. at 19 seeking a better life. The rest is history. The first big concert I saw was Cal Jam in 1974. There were over 200,000 of us there.
In order of appearance
Rare EarthEarth, Wind & FireEagles, joined by Jackson BrowneSeals and CroftsBlack Oak ArkansasBlack SabbathDeep PurpleEmerson, Lake & Palmer
That’s good stuff Sunman. What a concert that was.
I got a summer job at the Miami News in 1973, and among the many roles I played as a copyboy was being the rock and roll editor. And I had a very Cameron Crowe-esque experience from his autobiographical movie Almost Famous, where I interviewed Black Oak Arkansas on the same kind of cassette player he used in that movie. I interviewed the lead singer guy (the guy who sang Jim Dandy to the Rescue) in their hotel and then followed them to the Hollywood Sportatorium right up to the steps ascending to the stage. As he got to the top of the steps, that lead singer turned back to me and said, “Ain’t life grand!” and proceeded to the microphone. A year or so later their album of the same name came out.
I worked for the L.A. Herald Examiner in 1972 (no longer in business). It was an interesting 5 month experience. I’ve seen a few concerts in my day, not as many as most. ZZ Top, Tom Petty, Neil Young, The Who and a few others. I grew up in an area where the local radio stations only played country western or Mexican music. I liked western more than country, especially the ballads. I have a greater appreciation for C & W now than when I was younger. Pretty good stuff.
My 40 year old son introduced me to these two singers.

Thanks for sharing. Fascinating that we both ventured into the world of journalism early on, almost at the same time. In a way you guys are becoming my friends and it’s nice to know some of your backgrounds and interests. I think some of your thoughts, as I get to know you guys and how you look at things, are impacting the way I assess situations beyond basketball. All of you have wisdom, that comes thru in the things that you write. Because of you guys, I find myself evolving a little as time goes by, seeing more sides of issues, and realizing that sometimes you have to wait for trends to fully come clear before opining.

Wow! You guys are talking the golden age of rock and roll, as well as more harmony amongst people. 30, I was just saying a couple of days ago how most people have never heard of Spirit. Their Family That Plays Together is an absolute hidden gem. I never got to see them or Led Zeppelin, but did see Canned Heat. And SM, again wow! I wish I had seen ELP! An extraordinary trio of virtuoso musicians. I have seen E,W,&F, Deep Purple, Ozzy, Eagles. I also got to see The Doors, and 2 of my all time favorites, John Lennon and David Bowie.
Thats quite a list. Seems like we all had classic rock in our blood. It took me many years into adulthood to finally appreciate country music also. I always thought of ELP and Yes as perhaps amongst the most highly skilled and trained musicians of all time.,
I saw pretty much all of those you list, except Lennon and The Doors. The Doors were infamous for Morrison’s behavior during a concert in Miami. My rarest concert of a great group that few seem to have seen, was Cream on their Goodbye tour. Another pretty rare person I saw was Johnny Winter, what an unbelievable talent he was. Spirit had a strange, but in its way great song, called Mechanical World. They had several other really good songs but that was the song the fans went crazy for in concert. Randy California was their lead guitarist and he had an amazing career.
Cream? I’m jealous. But I did get to see Clapton and, at a different time, West, Bruce, and Laing.
Did you see Mountain?
Sadly, no. But West, Bruce, and Laing played Cream and Mountain songs.
Cream had so many good songs in such a short period of time (1966-68). Damn! 1966 is 60 years ago. We must be old.
They really did and then one of my other many favorites, Steve Winwood, came in to create Blind Faith – unbelievable!
Traffic before that. Dear Mr. Fantasy (1967).

From the Beginning (ELP) is one of my favorite songs.
Me too. I grew a beard about 6 months ago. First time. Haven’t shaved it off yet. I had a goatee for 50 years.
