After suffering a 4-0 series sweep to the reigning NBA champion OKC Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, the LA Lakers will approach a long offseason filled with questions. The biggest one will be surrounding the future of LeBron James.
For the first time since 2018, James is set to hit unrestricted free agency. He will be completely free to make any decision he wants to at this stage of his career— whether it’s remaining with the Lakers, going somewhere else or even retiring.
Considering James has announced zero retirement plans for this 2025-26 campaign, it’s hard to imagine that he would hang it up without any proper farewell tour for arguably the greatest player in NBA history. Despite his age of 41 years old, he is still remarkably one of the league’s top players today. He definitely has a couple more seasons left in him, at least physically. James is coming off season averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, 6.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals on 51.5% shooting.
The LA Lakers era with LeBron may be coming to a close.
The writing has been on the wall since last summer, where the Lakers refused to offer an extension to James. This suggests they may be officially committing to building around Luka Doncic moving forward. They may ask for a significant pay cut from James if he wants to remain in Los Angeles. But if that relationship has truly reached the end of an era, where would a 41-year-old James go to finish off his legendary career?
An argument can be made for several teams that could utilize his services. However, would he really be interested in starting completely over with a new organization at this point? If not, that leaves a return to his old roots with either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Miami Heat as possibilities.
A LeBron return to South Beach to end his career would be an iconic full circle moment:
According to Bleacher Report, they believe that the Heat could form a new Big 3 of James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo this summer.
“The Heat are considered to be a top suitor for Giannis. If they could get that blockbuster done, (LeBron) James could form a new super team with Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo.”
(via Bleacher Report)
In this exact scenario, Miami would need to accomplish an Antetokounmpo trade first— obviously a major domino needing to fall that is much easier said than done. But let’s dream for a second and say the Heat get it done for Giannis. It would be an enticing roster for a player of James’ caliber to consider joining.
The money outside of James, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo becomes virtually nonexistent. So all three of Tyler Herro, Norman Powell and Andrew Wiggins likely depart. But Terry Rozier’s near $25 million salary will also be free’d up to utilize. Additionally, there will be several veteran options lining up to play in Miami for a discounted price for a chance to contend in a wide open Eastern Conference.
You get the talent first. The rest can be figured out later.
What’s in it for LeBron? Besides the fact of being a contending team alongside Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, he returns to a desirable market for endorsements and a place he is comfortable with in Miami— where he reached four straight NBA Finals in the prime of his career over a decade ago. He hasn’t had that same success anywhere else in such a short amount of time.
The Heat organization could host a special farewell tour for James whenever he decides to officially retire, just as they did with Dwyane Wade in 2019. And who wouldn’t want to retire in sunny South Florida?
Clearly, a lot of big ‘if’s’ involved to make something like this happen. But Pat Riley has been public on the idea of the “key being under the matt” for LeBron, who could potentially have a solid 2-3 year playing window left in his final destination.

harlan dwade candace parker best announcing crew going
game 7 the team that has harden will lose
det really impressive .donovan was terrible.107 91 det 2 mind left
det bench been awesome.cades not doing anything in second half, duren having good game hes got a better handle than bam.might be better than bam
Didn’t you say the opposite just one game ago?
duren has been kind of a disappointment until this game rc.he was aggressive offensively with some good moves driving to the hoop.ive never seen this guy shoot a j to be honest have u.this paul reed is just as impressive.nice 1 2 punch,
this paul reed some player they have duren stewart a heater.dunc playing very well
dunc benched second half
Why? 14 pts in 20 minutes?
harden playing so bad for the most part 58 turnovers in playoffs
Bron is staying put in LA. Or retiring. If he don’t lower his pay no contending team will want him. And definitely he doesn’t want to go to a mediocre team. Personally i don’t want too much drama in Miami. Lastly Bron doesn’t like Pat and Spo.
he came for wade not pat def not spobot.
Don’t want a 40 year old lebron now especially with no 1a on the team and he knows this which is why he’s not coming anyway. Now I can see him going back to Cleveland for those reasons Mitchell ,harden, lebron…….entertaining if nothing else!
asaur thompson might be the best non center defender in nba guy cant score a lick looks like one way player
james harden talking about strus said we havent seen that in a long time hes capable of doing that what a douch strus prob thinking why the f say that
This offseason has started out loony tunes.
The worst thing I can imagine it would be something like this.
I’m curious as to why. Would you not be entertained? 🙂 I’m not sure they could win but it would be season long drama one way or another.
its got 0 % chance of happening unless wade came out of retirement.bron came here to play with wade i think hes not on the team anymore.incred that lebron is still playing at high level.think its either la or cleve next year outside chance nyk
A lot of reasons.
-Bam, Giannis and LBJ are not my favourite kind of players. I prefer to watch skilled point guards and wings.
-I know exactly what to expect from those three. that make things somehow boring.
-I really like watching young players developing. If those three are playing in the same team, there wont be any young players.
-and finally, I like drama on the court, but I dislike drama off the court.
I understand, that you need top players to be a contender, so I m supporting chasing Giannis, despite that makes this team boring for me. but adding LBJ is a bit too much.
And, there is always a very good chance, that you wake up in the morning and you learned, that LBJ had the season (career) ending injury.
Thanks for the reply.
Then the Heat would have to sign his dipsh*t son too as a nepo baby deal. LeBron’s got enough money. He needs to accept way less money and then Miami could build a contender. Otherwise, let him go back to Cleveland where they get bounced out of the playoffs.
Lol imagine jr tagging along. Lots of diehard long-time Lakers fans hated that nepotism and its ok for them for LeBron to leave.
The lineup suggested above would be pure dynamite. Unlikely, but fun to consider.
Entertain us!
The line-up suggested would probably only be on the court like 30 games. Lebron has missed over 20 games a year in the last 6 years. Giannis has missed over 20 games a year in the last 6 years.
Throw in a few games for Bam, Pelle and Davion. You got a line-up that just won’t play together much.
Loved having LeBron here. If he wants to finish his career in Miami, I won’t be mad. But I would say my expectations wouldn’t be through the roof.
Yes, that may be true, but it would be one heck of a lineup when they were on the floor together. And fun to watch.
lebron hates pat ditto jimmy prob wade to so do lots heat fans.sooner pat leaves the better
