It’s officially official: Giannis Antetokounmpo is a member of the Miami Heat.
Just over an hour after the July moratorium was lifted, the Heat made their acquisition of Antetokounmpo official. As expected, they also acquired Bobby Portis while trading Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including No. 13 overall in last month’s draft), one first-round pick swap and one future second-round pick to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Miami Heat president Pat Riley released a statement following the news, stating that it was one of the greatest trades in franchise history.
“The announcement of today’s trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. is one of the great trades in HEAT history,” Riley said via release. “In my opinion, Giannis is one of the top five players in the league and Bobby is one of the best power forwards.
“The difficult part is trading Tyler, Kasparas, Jaime and Kel’el who have given so much to this organization, we wish them nothing but the best. I also want to thank the Arison’s for their continued pursuit towards winning a championship and we feel this gives us a better opportunity moving forward. I want to welcome Giannis and Bobby to the Miami HEAT family.”
Antetokounmpo will wear 34, while Portis will wear 95.
There have been four Heat players to wear 34, last repped by Ray Allen (2012-14). However, there have been no players to wear 95; Only one player in Heat history has worn a number in the 90s (Jae Crowder, 2019-20).
Antetokounmpo released a classy video tribute regarding his time with the Bucks, where he spent 13 seasons. The 10-time All-Star helped secure the franchise’s second-ever title in 2020-21. He’s the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, while also leading them in games, minutes played, field goal makes, rebounds, assists and blocks, among several other statistics.

It is interesting to see where Miami and several other teams are ranked. 4 of the top 5 ranked teams are in the west. 6 of the top 10 ranked teamsare in the east. Notice the two highest increases in rankings were Philadelphia jumping from #18 to #7 (+11) and Miami jumping from #23 to #12 (+11). Miami is the 7th highest ranked team in the east following the trade for Giannis Atetokounmpo (up from #10 before the play-in round).
