As it stands, the Miami Heat— along with other suitors— remain in their holding pattern while they await LeBron James’ anticipated free agent decision.
Miami still has not filled out the rest of their open roster spots just a little over one week before going into August. There are currently 12 standard contracts set, leaving a pathway to still add two or three more pieces on the open market. But before doing so, Pat Riley and the Heat are staying committed to getting their clarity on James.
Each of Riley and newly acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo have made their public pitches to James over recent days following Antetokounmpo’s introduction presser. Riley noted Miami’s weather, golf courses and no state income tax— whereas Giannis vouched for James’ championship experience as a significant pickup for the Heat.
Adding LeBron James shifts the Heat’s upside from contenders to title favorites.
James’ basketball fit on this Heat roster would be undeniably elite, despite lingering outside noise of lack of shooters. They will have arguably six or seven players capable of shooting 38-40% from 3-point range ready to take full advantage of James and Antetokounmpo’s passing and playmaking.
Unlike other rival landing spots like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers or Golden State Warriors— James would get the green light in the Heat’s offense as a primary ball handler. Which is something he took a third fiddle role on with the LA Lakers this past season.
They present the best defensive fit, which should be enticing in itself. A 41-year-old James would be tasked of guarding the worst player on each opposing team, when considering he will be surrounded by Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins, Bam Adebayo and Antetokounmpo.
Additionally, Miami provides playing alongside the top option on the sidelines in reuniting with coach Erik Spoelstra, a top-20 uber versatile two-way anchor in Adebayo and a top-5 player in the world with Antetokounmpo’s arrival— the most dominant in his prime co-star out of all the other landing spots.
There will be backup options, but none even close to the magnitude of LeBron
It’s expected that in the aftermath of a potential James signing, that another sharpshooting and/or big man addition would be to follow and solidify Miami’s 2026-27 roster.
Klay Thompson had recently been pinned as a target that the Heat are interested in, whether or not they land James. However, if they don’t— that’s where a pivot to guys like DeMar DeRozan or Bradley Beal could truly emerge.
DeRozan has been linked to Miami several times over the years and is coming off an 18.4 points per game campaign on nearly 50% shooting. As solid as those numbers look, that wouldn’t even be close to the significance that a LeBron addition would look like. James provides shooting capabilities of his own— plus an All-NBA caliber playmaking and basketball IQ skill set that DeRozan does not bring to the table.
Miami has doubled down on the patient roster building approach while waiting on James. And he is absolutely worth it.

Going from Brentwood to Cleveland is like going from Miami to Sacramento. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that one out.
Philly has 3 players who all need the ball already in Maxey, Brown, Embiid, that is a poorly built team imo even before adding Lebron who would make it 4. They lack defense and rebounding. Paul George was untradeable on his contract and often missed games, so they get out of that problem, but create a new one because Brown is not the off ball player or defender that PG is and will take touches from Maxey.
Cleveland is similar with Mitchell and Harden who both play on ball exclusively and don’t defend. CLE as of now would be asking Lebron to slot in to Dean Wade’s role as starting 3. Wade was out there to guard the opponents best players, which Lebron at 41 isn’t going to do.
Miami IMO has built a team reminiscent of the 2021 Milwaukee title team around Giannis with defense. That team had Khris Middleton as the #2 option, Jrue Holiday the #3, and Brook Lopez, and then a mid season trade for PJ Tucker put them over the top.
Not a direct 1 to 1 comparison but a lot of similarities between those two teams IMO. Lebron could fill the Middleton role as the #2 scorer, and will be one of the best passers on any team he goes to, he averaged 7 assists last year. GSW is the other obvious fit team out there besides Miami IMO, they have a system and a defensive foundation, and need more talent overall.
One, James is not the same playmaker as before. Two, him and his group wants at least one more title and is looking for a legit favorite to win it all right away so the closest for me are NY, San Antonio and OKC. They don’t want a season of trial and error since its just Giannis first year Heat is not yet the title fave team (but that’s just me lol). Three, they also want some control of “operations” as the previous teams James was part of even if they deny it and definitely there would be another “clash of opinions” with the godfather and co. But the decision arrow looks like its pointing to south beach. Imo Philly or Cleve are more ideal for Bron.
With Bam and Giannis already on board, having another top dog, even the old one in the team could be a dogs fight.
the problem with Philly and Cleveland is that their best players want the ball in their hands and don’t play defense. Y’know who else wants the ball in his hands and doesn’t play defense? LeBron!
I think this decision will be based on more than basketball. And I still think LeBron picks Cleveland. But if these are the last 3 teams, the Heat are the best basketball fit. They can surround LeBron with 3 superstar defenders, and a 3-and-D wing like Hardaway or Pelé. I’m not saying it’s a guaranteed championship. But it’s a perfect fit for LeBron
In addition to weather, no state income taxes, familiarity with the city and organization, there are other advantages for selecting Miami over other Eastern teams or Golden State. As pointed out above:

I agree. There is no other team in the running that has a player equal to Giannis. And the ball handling issue is a very big deal. He certainly won’t have that in Cleveland or Philadelphia. The defense will be top notch.
Also, on a different note, watch out for Mitchell. He is not only going to Greece to work out with Giannis, but has been working on his 3 point shooting. This is a guy absolutely committed to working on his game. Towards the end of last season, I wondered if he could experience a Brunson-ish (im not comparing them) leap to his game.

I think Davion has not yet hit his ceiling offensively. He is definitely a huge asset defensively, especially his point of attack defense. Furthermore, I believe his playmaking/assists and 3 point shooting have room for improvement, especially playing on a team with Giannis, Bam and hopefully LeBron.
I hope Davion elevates his game and earns himself a nice 2-3 year extension this season.

Zo, Timmy, Shaq, Bosh, Lebron, Bitler, and now Giannis. Riley brought them all here. Sure, Lebron wanted to play alongside Wade, but he came here also because of Riley’s and the Heat reputation. And Lebron had more success here than anywhere else despite having playing on other loaded teams.

He left Miami to return to Cleveland. Wade was still on the Heat, so that didn’t make much of a difference then. I don’t think it makes a difference now. He has other priorities.

DeRozan hasn’t played on a winning team since 2021-22. The Kings were -588 with him on the court last year, compared to -232 without him. He also occupies the same space on the floor as Bam and Giannis, and isn’t a ball handler.
Beal has averaged only 40.4 games over the last 5 seasons. He’s had a positive plus minus only twice in that span. He has a net 6 losses in that span.
How exactly do these two, make Miami the championship favorites? Right now they have the 7th best odds, tied with two other teams (on FanDuel). They are roughly 9 times less likely according to those odds, than the favorites tied (Spurs/Thunder). You think one washed player, and one near the end veteran are going to improve Miami’s odds by 9 times?
DeRozan would be outstanding off the bench. He is highly regarded for his elite mid-range scoring, exceptional footwork, and remarkable durability. He is also praised for his veteran leadership, strong playmaking abilities, and his prominent advocacy for mental health awareness in professional sports.
If Riley has the chance to sign DeRozan on a vet minimum contract, he should do so without hesitation!
Beal probably wouldn’t make it to the playoffs a la Embiid.
LeBron is the only game changer available in Miami’s price range. DeRozan scored well for a bad team. Beal is washed. These guys were net positive in the last year.
James is old, he’s not longer a star. His elite defense is gone. But he is a player is has an overall net positive on the game, despite all that.
I think if he land him, great. If they don’t, it was still the right move, if they are trying to field the best team they could this year.
I wouldn’t mind having DeRozan. I’m not sure, but I think we would be happier with him than perhaps some do. The playing on a bad team factor can hide what a player has left. Maybe two years is a long time ago but he beat us back then with some beautiful, highly difficult, clutch shots during that season.
Now, for Beal, I admit there is more uncertainty as to whether he would be able to do much. But, even with him, beggars can’t be choosers and he’s the best still available at our price.
I would be okay with either IF we don’t get Lebron. I prefer Lebron as he is more of a playmaker, of course.
I mean not exactly a who’s who of available players willing to take 3-5M. So sure, if you miss on LeBron and can sign DeRozan or Beal, you do what you can. But neither of those players have really helped teams win recently. A bunch of empty stats for DeRozen, and declining numbers and missed games for Beal.
I would prefer other players.

I’m not saying these guys are bad – but if you are hoping to win (which if I’m not a mistaken you were big in the Pro Giannis trade camp), wouldn’t the better player help more?

Beal or Derozan are not right players for this team. I would prefer to Heat find another center as an insurance, and a playmaker, for the same reason. If Lebron comes, one of those two wouldnt be possible, so I would say a center, not a playmaker.
The center market is pretty bare bones at this point.

I would take Dwight Howard over Dwight powell, but other than that you right bigs and guards are looking scarce .
I want LeBron the most of the three also. Even at his advanced age last year, there were times when he could get a.basket when you need it, about as well as almost anyone. And, maybe it’s being a homer, but I agree the best fit for him is here.
