D-Wade discusses LeBron‘s decision to join 76ers over Heat return

At one point of this 2026 Miami Heat offseason, there was a legitimate shot at witnessing a LeBron James reunion in South Beach.

The Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers were all heavily linked to the 41-year-old star in unrestricted free agency. Ultimately, James shocked the world and pulled out the ultimate ring chasing move by joining a stacked Sixers organization fresh off their trade to acquire Jaylen Brown. A major pay cut was inevitable for all the teams interested in adding James, which makes the Sixers decision sting just a little bit more.

Miami could have had a still All-Star caliber LeBron alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo for a veteran minimum price tag.

Former two-time Heat champion Chris Bosh was vocal during the process in vouching for James to choose Miami. And another major piece to the 2010-2014 “Big Three” and franchise legend Dwyane Wade also shared his thoughts on James’ Sixers decision during a recent podcast.

D-Wade says he understood that LeBron joining the Sixers puts him in the best position to win.

“From a basketball standpoint, I thought it is a very strategic move at this point in his career. It definitely gives him the best chance… I feel like it gives him the best chance in the East to be able to get back to compete for a championship.

I think Miami would have been a good move as well, but a lot of moving parts in that needed to go right. I feel like this is a little bit more— right away from the beginning— the best chance (to win).”

James joining an extremely top heavy group alongside Brown, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid was the most stacked lineup he could have joined in free agency. All three of those co-stars next to James are capable of averaging at least over 26 points per game.

As fitting as ending it in Miami would have been, not even an Antetokounmpo and Adebayo duo could’ve provided that much scoring power.

If James was looking for a more prominent offensive role with more scoring and ball handling duties— which is what it seemed like initially after rumors surfaced of LeBron not being fond of playing third fiddle to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in Los Angeles— then the Heat could’ve been a seamless fit. But ultimately, James opted for an easier workload next to three capable superstars to take on most of the responsibilities.

The only question mark surrounding Philadelphia comes with being so many shots and one ball to go around for four stars and a rising VJ Edgecombe all in one lineup. (Not to mention the Embiid health question marks).
