Why Pelle Larsson’s extension is a crucial piece of business for Miami Heat’s off-season

In what’s been a bombastic off-season for the Miami Heat, with a massive move for Giannis Antetokounmpo pulling all the headlines, it might seem like a contract extension for a rotation piece like Pelle Larsson is a footnote compared to the big stories this year. Larsson might not move the needle on the best prediction market apps, but his importance can’t be understated.

The Miami Heat’s decision to tie Pelle Larsson down to a 4-year contract is very informative of Miami’s plans. With the huge gamble the Heat are undertaking, relying on Giannis and Bam Adebayo to make them serious contenders, extending Larsson’s contract shows not only an investment in the future, but an investment in Heat Culture itself.

The numbers behind the deal

The deal itself tells the story of Miami’s calculation. Larsson signed a four-year, $60 million extension with a mutual option for the 2030-31 season, starting at roughly $13.5 million in 2027-28, a figure that sits just below the non-taxpayer midlevel exception.

The Heat had until the start of training camp to get this done, avoiding a scenario where Larsson tested restricted free agency next summer. He’s the only member of the roster that was still extension eligible.

Context matters here. Last summer, the Heat handed Nikola Jovic a four-year, $62.5 million extension after he had fallen out of the rotation. Larsson’s deal costs less annually despite him already outproducing what Jovic had shown at the same stage. For a front office managing books around two max-level stars, these value contracts are gold dust.

Why it fits Miami’s big picture

Pelle Larsson averaged a career-high 11.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists last season on 49.6 percent shooting, starting 54 of 70 games. He ranked among the Heat’s best in charges drawn and offensive efficiency, the kind of two-way production that fits neatly into a roster built around size and physicality.

More telling is what Miami didn’t do. The Heat kept Larsson out of the package they sent to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo, even though including him would have made the trade easier to construct. That decision suggests the front office views him as a long-term piece in the lineup.

Larsson’s summer with Sweden at the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, averaging 26 points across four games, only reinforced that his ceiling is still rising. Locking him in now, at a below-market rate, gives Miami cost certainty on a player they clearly expect to keep improving around their new core.

Right now, it looks like Larsson will be sharing minutes with Klay Thompson at shooting guard, and will be an important rotation piece around the Heat’s double all-star line-up. A player like Larsson, well-built, passionate, hard working, is exactly the piece that makes these teams function: a small but crucial cog in a monstrous basketball machine.

Ryan Nembhard has been waived. This would be a really good pickup for the Heat buy waiving Vlad and giving Nembhard the 2-way.

No need to rush. Miami needs a difference maker not another roster filler. I would hold off for a while and see if any teams want to make trades or if any quality players are bought out and released.

Spo still needs to see how the team gels and what to expect from players such as Giannis, Klay, Portis, Hardaway, Conwell, Donaldson, Gardner and Jovic.

It really wouldn’t be a rush. 2-ways can be swapped out anytime with no consequence. No teams are lining up poach Vlad. Kid has some real game even though undersized.

I know. Right now we are just shopping for deck chairs until something better comes along.

What about D’Angelo? Any chance he could regain some of his game?

The next objective should be to extend Mitchell. I think once he has demonstrated his improved game and increased value, Riley will be quick to offer him an extension. 4
years/$80M sounds about right.

Otherwise, he may be included in a trade for a more established PG. Personally, I really like his defense and positive attitude. He’s the best poa PG Miami has had in years.

Agree with the “point of attack” PG assessment…by far! Think Riley stated if he had 6 more inches he’d be a HOFer.

DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK

The good thing about this year’s team is that Mitchell, Wiggins and Larsson are very good perimeter defenders. When opponents’ offensive players do get by them, they can be chaneled directly into Miami’s interior buzz saw (Giannis and Bam). Teams are going to have difficulty scoring consistently against Miami. The key will be for the Heat to find ways to score when their opponents are having difficulty scoring.

OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK

Giannis is good for 25+ ppg and Bam is good for 20 ppg. I can see the potential ppg averages for the probable regular 8- man rotation players as follows:

Giannis: 25 ppg
Bam: 20 ppg
Wiggins: 15 ppg
Thompson: 15 ppg
Larsson: 13 ppg
Portis: 13 ppg
Mitchell: 12 ppg
Hardaway: 10 ppg

That is equal to an approximate scoring average of 123 ppg. That would likely rank Miami as the #1 scoring team in the NBA.

If called upon to provide regular minutes filling in for any of the preceding players, I see potential scoring averages for the following players:

Jovic: 15
Fontecchio: 8 ppg
Richards: 6 ppg
Smith: 6 ppg
Conwell: 6 ppg
Gardner: 6 ppg

CONCLUSION

I have seen several preseason polls predicting Miami will be a midling (#13 – #18) NBA team and a #6 – #8 team in the Eastern Conference. Most credible preseason models project the Heat to finish the 2026‑27 season around 47–35, placing them 7th in the Eastern Conference, In effect, the Heat is predicted to be a play-in team…again.

I think most of the prognosticators are wrong. If both Miami’s offense and defense both click, I can see the Heat being a top 4 team in the East, tough to beat during the regular season and definitely not a team others will want to face in the playoffs. But that’s just me.

GO HEAT!!!

east gonna be a btch.from top to bottom stronger than west.u add lebron and kawhi that alone tips the scale to east coast.its possible we could finish as 7th seed, lots new faces in new places could take a while to gel.like any team gonna need some good seasons from guys other than bam and greek.im not sure what we can get from klay goal for him hitting 40% 3s,tim hard jr in the 40% range.dav needs to give us 12 -14 pts 8-10assists.wiggy 18 pts .u look at that phily team its loaded with 4 hofers thats the kind of team we are gonna need to beat, imo we are still short a #2 option.i need bam as third best player on team .for my 4th .i dont think u can win a champ with bam as your 2nd best player

I don’t think we will know how good the team can be for at least a couple of months. As long as everyone knows their roles and can avoid putting too much pressure on themselves (the way Jovic did last year), things should be alright.

As I’ve mentioned before, sometimes the sum can be greater than the parts (e.g. Miami) and sometimes the sum can be less (e.g. Sixers).

I can’t wait to see which category the Heat will be in.

Klay absolutely does not have to hit 40% on 3s. 38% is fine. Wiggins will be in that ppg range. The Heat doesn’t need to fear any team. Having one of the best players in the league gives us a chance against anyone.

A real fan wouldn’t abandon his team in a down year. I haven’t. I won’t.

I see Pelle sharing time with both Wiggins and Thompson. With Bam, Giannis, Mitchell and Portis, Miami is 1-2 players away from a solid rotation. If 2-3 of the reserve players are able to step up, the rotation should be strong. The Preseason should be very competitive.
