Evaluating the San Antonio Spurs’ 2026 offseason:
Additions: Tobias Harris
Subtractions: Mason Plumlee, Kelly Olynyk, Bismack Biyombo
Re-signed: Victor Wembanyama, Harrison Barnes, Julian Champagnie, Jordan McLaughlin
Draft: Jayden Quaintance (No. 20 overall), Tarris Reed (No. 26), Ja’Kobe Gillespie (No. 45)
Hanifan’s outlook: Even though the result leaves a sour taste in theirs and every Spurs fan’s mouth, they defied odds last season. In the first-ever postseason run with Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs conquered the West with series wins over the Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves and the then-defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, winning Game 7 on OKC’s home floor.
However, they ran out of gas against the New York Knicks, blewing a slew of double-digit leads, losing the series 4-1. This summer, they turned around and extended their French superstar to a $252 million extension, although he didn’t take the Rose Rule incentives that would have pushed it to $303 million, preserving some flexibility. The Spurs also signed Tobias Harris to a team-friendly $31 million deal, and drafted a pair of bigs in Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed, replacing Mason Plumlee and Bismack Biyombo.
Quaintance is the big name here. Due to multiple knee injuries, he was limited to just 28 games across two years. He was easily the best defensive prospect in the 2026 class, and was a monster at Arizona State at just 17-years-old. His ceiling is through the roof, though his floor is just as low given his availability — or lack thereof. I’m not sure if he will get much — if any run — as a rookie. But if he’s ever healthy enough to play alongside Wembanyama, have fun, because you’re better off playing pickleball or a completely different sport if you’re on offense.
