This has somehow been the most injury plagued season of Tyler Herro’s entire seven-year career with the Miami Heat, which has already been filled with an assortment of availability issues throughout.
Herro has appeared in just 11 of the Heat’s first 42 games during this 2025-26 campaign thus far. And that figure is likely to become 11 of 47 games after the latest disappointing Herro update:
It was already certain that he was going to be sidelined for Monday’s late-night tip off versus the Golden State Warriors, as it was announced prior that Herro had not made the road trip with the team. But now it’s confirmed that it’s unlikely he rejoins Miami for the entirety of the five-game trip all together.
“An MRI on Heat guard Tyler Herro revealed a costochondral issue with his ribs and he’s unlikely to join the team during its five-game trip that begins tonight against Warriors in San Francisco,” Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang iterated via X. “A timeline for his return is still undetermined.”
Fortunately for the Heat, they are used to playing without their former 2024 All-Star. Guys like Norman Powell, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel’el Ware have been the biggest beneficiaries of extended roles and/or minutes in Herro’s absences.
The Miami Heat have gone 18-13 without Tyler Herro this season.
That record dips to just 4-7 with Herro in the lineup.
In the brief 11-game sample size he has appeared in, the 25-year-old is averaging 22 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 50/36/90 shooting splits. When healthy, the three-level scoring guard has proved that he is an All-Star caliber player after earning the honor last year when he had played in a career-high 77 games. He is also the league’s reigning 3-point champion.
But his availability issues have held him back from building off that impressive 2024-25 season. Additionally, it’s held back the rest of the team this year, too, as lineups and roles have had to get adjusted in each of Herro’s stints after returning from injury— just to get shelved again with something else.
The talent in Herro’s offensive game has never been doubted. But he has yet to make much improvement, if at all, as a wing defender ever since he came into the league— along with submitting just one out of a possible seven healthy seasons for Miami. By the way, he is still due for a max contract extension this upcoming summer.
At this rate, I’d be shocked if the Heat even entertain that extension. Herro is still under contract for the entirety of the next 2026-27 season for $33 million before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
