Miami Heat guard Davion Mitchell is set to miss his fourth-straight game with a shoulder injury, last playing just 19 minutes in their 130-117 win over the Sacramento Kings on Jan. 19.
Head coach Erik Spoelstra offered an injury update on the 6-foot point guard ahead of their game against the Orlando Magic.
“While he’s been out, I think [Kasparas Jakucionis] and [Dru Smith] have done a very good job with (team’s point of attack defense, pace),” Spoelstra said, according to Clutch Points’ Zachary Weinberger. “We miss him, but we want to be smart about it. … We’re going to continue to treat him. He’s doing more and more on the court, and when he’s ready, he’ll be ready.”
As a result, Spoelstra’s response about a timeline was pretty nondescript. Though it appears that Mitchell, at the very least, is doing more to get back on the court as soon as possible. He’s been seen doing full pregame work, so perhaps his return is imminent.
The Heat will play four games over their next five days, including a string of three-straight as a result of a postponement earlier this month.
Why Erik Spoelstra will have tough decision to make when Davion Mitchell returns:
In Mitchell’s absence, Heat rookie Kasparas Jakucionis has stepped up amicably, even if the numbers don’t paint the full picture.
Over his last seven games, he’s averaging 5.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists on 40.0 percent shooting, including 9-of-21 from 3-point range (42.9 percent). He’s been one of the Heat’s better perimeter defenders, playmakers and 3-point shooters over that stretch.
Most importantly, he’s shown that he should be a rotation player for the rest of the season, barring injury. He’s outplayed Dru Smith, who’s been quite disruptive the team’s last two games.
There’s a chance Spoelstra keeps all three of Mitchell-Jakucionis-Smith in the rotation, but the rookie has played his way above him the last 20 or so games. We’ll all have a better feel for what the rotation should look upon the conclusion of the Feb. 5 trade deadline. But as it stands right now, when all three are healthy, Jakucionis has done enough to earn a rotation spot over Smith.
