2025-26 Miami Heat Player Review: Davion Mitchell

(Mandatory credit: Megan Briggs/GettyImages)

The Miami Heat have a big offseason ahead, but let’s still review what happened this season! To continue with our Miami Heat player review series, we dive into two-way point guard Davion Mitchell!

Past Player Reviews:

Brief Overview:

2025-26 stats (70 games):

  • 9.3 PPG
  • 6.5 APG
  • 2.7 RPG
  • 1.0 STLS
  • 49.0 FG%
  • 39.5 3P%
  • 58.0 TS%

After arriving in South Beach at last year’s trade deadline, Davion Mitchell re-signed on a team friendly two-year deal last summer after an encouraging half-season stint with the Heat. It didn’t take long for Mitchell to win over fans with his tenacious efforts on the defensive end and point of attack defense on the perimeter. However, unlike in his previous career stops, he has developed into a well rounded player on both ends of the floor under coach Erik Spoelstra. He has been available, consistent and reliable— and even Pat Riley gushed over Mitchell’s play-in performance that nearly led Miami into keeping their 2025-26 season alive.

Numbers to note:

70 — Games played (and starts)

As mentioned, Mitchell has been available and one of the Heat’s more reliable players in recent years. He appeared in 70 total games this past season with all of them featuring himself as the starting point guard.

Spoelstra ended up leaning into Mitchell as the “head of the snake” to run the team’s offense all year long. As he was the only non-Bam and non-Andrew Wiggins player to start in every single game he appeared in.

.49 — Field goal percentage

Mitchell’s shooting efficiency was arguably the greatest of his entire career this season. He shot a career-high 49% from the field, and nearly 40% from 3-point range as well. When it comes to his outside shooting, Mitchell really just picked up where he left off during his half-year stint with the Heat after his trade arrival.

6.5 — Assists per game

Considering the increased opportunity that Mitchell has received working with Spoelstra, there are other career-high’s worth mentioning. As the starting point guard for this group, he totaled a career-best 6.5 assists per game.

Of course, part of this is the trust that Spoelstra has invested into Mitchell. He’s never averaged more than 4.6 assists in any other jersey besides with the Heat. His playmaking was one of the most underrated positives of the season.

Best Game?

This was an easy choice.

Mitchell’s most impactful game of this campaign came when it mattered the most— in the Heat’s season ending play-in loss versus the Charlotte Hornets. It may not have led to the victory, but Mitchell’s efforts kept Miami in the game. And nearly led to pulling off the upset, as the entertaining thriller came down to the final seconds of overtime.

The 6-foot-0 guard led with a team-high 28 points to go along with 6 assists, 4 rebounds and two steals on 50% shooting. He played with energy, passion and efficiency amid totaling 47 minutes of playing time, which was the highest between both teams.

What’s next?

Luckily for Miami, they won’t have to worry about losing Mitchell this upcoming summer— unless his departure is initiated from the Heat’s end from a trade. Mitchell is under contract throughout the entire upcoming 2026-27 campaign, and set to earn a $12 million salary. For a valuable roster piece like himself, that $12 million figure is a steal in today’s NBA.

Barring any significant point guard acquisition over the offseason, or any potential Kasparas Jakucionis training camp and preseason breakout, Mitchell should be widely expected to remain in his starting role entering next season. He has fit like a glove since day one. And as long as Spoelstra allows him to continue being the best version of himself with an extended role, Mitchell should continue to thrive as a member of the Heat moving forward.

Some say he’s too small but he made it up by his grit and above ave defense. Can he be relied on as a starting pg for years? Hoped they mentioned how did he do going up against star guards.

We need this guy. He’s sort of an unsung hero. Everything an offense does is predicated upon good ball handling at the point guard position. But, this is a player who often defers to other scorers and some of his talents go under the radar. But, every once in a a while we get glimpses of what Davion can do when he has to, like in that Hornets game. And, the other trait that makes his value so much higher than the stats reveal, is his defense. Players who contribute in the ways Mitchell does are the backbone of successful franchises and it’s nice to know that one aspect of this organization, two way point guard play, is solidly filled.

It wasn’t that long ago everybody was crying for a point of attack/high assist PG. Now Heat has one and folks aren’t happy. Michell is not a ss. He’s a blue collar/lunch bucket kind of guy. In 2026-2027, he’ll be getting $3.8M less than Jovic.

Davion, Pelle and Jaime are birds of the same feather. Fearless and relentless.

if dunc can get 30 mins a game herro on a good defensive team could get 30.dunc gets blown by every time but durens waiting there to get duncs guy.and dunc flares out to pick up another guy.tyler herro is a better player than duncan so maybe tyler does have some value if he could ever stay healthy.

The truth is it wasn’t ever Dunc or Ty but what they were surrounded by, including each other. You can hide one targetable player, but not two or more. Ty could be a solid piece on a team set up where there’s more rim deterrence and four other two way players.

Davion is a very good two-way PG. He’s worth every penny he is being paid. He’s another player eligible for an extension this year who will be a free agent at the end of the season. Remember, he was selected the 2021 NCAA Defensive Player of the Year.

As evidenced by his last game against Charlotte, he has not begun to tap his offensive potential. Hopefully, he will be encouraged to be more aggressive offensively/shoot more next season.

I would like to see Davion remain with Miami in the future as a starting PG and eventually as a very solid back-up.

Classic Miami Heat player, underrated (despite being taken 9th in draft by Sacramento). Scorer in HS who established himself in college and early NBA career for his defense. Proved he can be a starting NBA PG this season. Also the perfect type of PG to play with Giannis

Davion is about what folks should have expected. I thought that contract was a mistake, but he’s earning what he’s paid, it just isn’t moving the needle enough here, but they are better with him on the court than off.

Way more to the game than ppg only. Mitchell averaged under 10 ppg because he took less than 8 shots per game. He was 8th on the team in FGA per game this year. He was an indispensable part of the Heat’s offense moving the ball up the floor with the pass and dribble, generating drives and kickouts, and playing fast while limiting TOs.

12m per year for a starting PG turned out to be one of the better signings of 2025 offseason

Caruso is a PG/SG. Was a PG in college, can play both and defend multiple positions. Started on Chicago a few years back. Never averaged more than 10.1 ppg in a single season, and has been a key part of two Finals winning teams

He’ll do in a pinch when you don’t have a starting caliber pinch. As a matter of fact, he would do very well as a starter on a high scoring team that needs him for his defense and playmaking more than his scoring.
