The pick is in!
The Miami Heat have traded up with the Oklahoma City Thunder and have selected Louisville guard Ryan Conwell with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
As a result, the two teams will swap picks (No. 37 and 41), according to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania.
Carrying plenty of the creation burden amid Mikel Brown’s health, Conwell had a very strong senior season at Louisville. He averaged 18.8 points and 4.8 rebounds on 40.8 percent shooting and 34.5 percent shooting from 3-point range.
Conwell played at four programs (South Florida, Indiana State, Xavier, Louisville) in four seasons. He was an All-Conference player in the Missouri Valley, Big East and ACC over his final three seasons, respectively.
A quick rundown of Ryan Conwell’s skillset:
Conwell’s calling card is simple: The Heat need shooting, and in the right role, Conwell is a shooter.
For the reasons listed above, his 34.5 3-point percentage is a little deceiving when it comes to projecting his role at the next level. Conwell’s primarily going to operate off-ball, and he’s a phenomenal off-ball shooter.
That will be his role at the next level. He’ll likely carry some burden as a secondary/tertiary ballhandler who can attack closeouts. He didn’t record a dunk last year, but he’s still a sneaky good athlete (39.5-inch max vert) with good-not-great touch around the rim.
Conwell’s also not a bad defender. He competes on that end of the floor. He has good-not-great size, but is competitive in the passing lanes and feisty at the point-of-attack.
However, he’s a little bit too handsy on the perimeter. He’s prone to picking up cheap, avoidable fouls; the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 3.8 fouls per 75 possessions as a senior and 3.5 for his career. He’s going to have to work on his discipline and body positioning in order to stick defensively.

Heat can always use another physical player such as Mitchell. Conwell sounds like he can be a good 3 point specialist off the bench. He was targeted to go #32 by Tankathon and #35 by NBA.com.
Analysis
Conwell lives at the rim and beyond the arc, almost never settling for long twos, and that kind of selection plays anywhere in today’s NBA. He carries real catch-and-shoot gravity, and his strong career free-throw efficiency gives every reason to believe the perimeter shot will translate against tougher closeouts in the NBA. His 215-pound frame is a plus for the position, letting him absorb contact, hold his ground in physical matchups and crash the defensive glass. He’s always in motion off the ball, sets screens and competes constantly. The strength is already there, but the feel for staying in front of quicker guards may need to sharpen with NBA reps.
Projection
Conwell projects as a plug-and-play floor spacer with the size and feel to fit cleanly into any modern NBA offense. His shot diet is already optimized for the league, his frame holds up in physical matchups and his off-ball activity gives coaches a willing piece to weave into screen and handoff actions. In terms of NBA comparisons, Conwell shares similarities to Donte DiVincenzo, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Cam Spencer. Conwell could step in as an immediate rotation contributor and grow into more from there.
