Even before the Miami Heat swung a massive two-team, six-player blockbuster for Giannis Antetokounmpo, they needed 3-point shooting.
Miami was good-not-great from 3-point range last season, but with uncertainty regarding the futures of Norman Powell, Tyler Herro and Simone Fontecchio, finding a few more snipers from distance to open up the floor always felt like a priority.
Now with Antetokounmpo, a freight train who’s one of the best downhill attackers in the NBA, in the building, fortifying the team’s shooting becomes an even bigger ask. But Heat star Bam Adebayo doesn’t quite see it that way.
“We’ll figure it out,” he said. “We don’t worry about the outside noise too much. We’ve done a lot more with less in our past years.”
Herro’s was dealt to Milwaukee in the trade, and Powell took his talents to The Windy City to play with the Bulls. Fontecchio’s back, but Miami is tasked with replacing over 40 percent of its 3-point production.
It signed veteran guard Tim Hardaway Jr. to a one-year, $6.5 million deal earlier this offseason, as well as drafting Ryan Conwell, a high volume 3-point shooter at four different stops in college.
Right now, the Heat’s biggest priority is reportedly acquiring Mavericks guard Klay Thompson, one of the best 3-point shooters ever. Rarely are there ever very good 3-point shooters available in free agency when August arrives, so it makes sense why the Heat is scouring the trade market.
They don’t have very much they can trade for, say, Thompson. They have one heavily protected second-round pick in 2027, and one conditional pick in 2029, as well as Nikola Jovic’s similar $16.2 million salary. That’s it.
Nevertheless, it’s critical the Heat add more volume 3-point shooting to open up the floor for Antetokounmpo and Adebayo as the season approaches. They have done an OK job since acquiring the two-time MVP, but OK is not good enough as it pertains to contending for a title.

Oh , its obvious, they should worry. This team is full of holes, and shooting is not the biggest of them.
I would say we need more playmaking, shooting, backup big, scorer from bench, in that order.
Players still available wont make much difference, so if there is a signing, its ok, if it is for 1 year minimum. But it is ok also, if there wont be any signings right now. Later in the season, its another story.

Talk is cheap and it’s easy to say you’re not worried. It sounds so good when you say something like that. But, maybe they should be concerned. Seems to me we are short on the skills we lost when Powell and Herro left, I.e. shot creation, finding your own shot on three levels. I’m just saying you can woof all you want and then there’s reality, which can bite.
I take a snide view when comments are put out there that sound like preset excuses for not getting any of the few players who could help us. I have heard that kind of talk plenty before. In fact, Bam’s saying we did a lot more before with less is an admission the team would never have made before the season or deadline last year.
Hey, if we can’t get someone but we try, that’s fine. But, don’t tell me we have enough. Even with Giannis, we don’t. Giannis can lift us up, but not to the stratosphere.
Exactly! Riley brought in Giannis, now he must bring in the supporting cast. Otherwise, Miami will still not be an elite (top 4) Eastern Conference team. There are too many good teams in the east this season for Heat fans to assume anything.
