Report: Heat expected to offer Bam Adebayo ‘lucrative extension’ this offseason

It looks like Bam Adebayo, 26, will rightfully be getting a max extension offer this offseason. (Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports)

While it shouldn’t be considered a shock, the Miami Heat are expected to offer Bam Adebayo a “lucrative extension” this offseason, Heat insider and beat reporter Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported Friday morning.

As a foundational piece for the Heat who is still a few years away from turning 30, the expectation is that Adebayo will receive a lucrative extension from the organization this offseason to keep him in Miami for years to come,” Chiang wrote.

A “lucrative extension,” per se, all but certainly entails it will be a max extension.

The size of Adebayo’s max contract will depend on whether he makes the All-NBA team or not. He is currently eligible for a three-year, $165.8 million extension which won’t begin until the 2026-27 season; if he makes an All-NBA team, he would be eligible for a four-year supermax worth approximately $245 million.

He will be entering the fourth year of a five-year, $163 million extension he signed ahead of the abbreviated 2020-21 season. He is on the books for roughly $72 million over the next two seasons with cap hits of $34.8M and $37.1M over the next two seasons, respectively.

A normal max extension would guarantee him over $235 million through the 2028-29 season, his age-31 season, while a supermax guarantees him over $300 million. This is all assuming that this year’s cap raise sticks at a 3.66 percent increase with the subsequent seasons following a 10 percent increase, which is what it was (approximately) over the previous two seasons. If this year’s projection changes, it will affect what his final salary will be when that extension kicks in.

Adebayo, who will turn 27-years-old in July, has been a franchise pillar ever since he was taken No. 14 overall in the 2017 draft. If anyone has earned a (super)max extension, it’s him.

He averaged 19.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.9 blocks last season with the Heat, shooting 52.1 percent from the floor, 35.7 percent from 3-point range–albeit on a small sample–and 75.5 percent from the free-throw line. He recently finished in the top-3 in Defensive Player of the Year voting, his highest finish ever, marking his fifth consecutive top-5 finish for the award.

As I alluded to in our offseason preview, you could practically guarantee that Adebayo’s receiving a max extension of some sort this offseason. He was always going to get that money–and rightfully so. The biggest puzzle piece is whether or not Jimmy Butler, who will be 35-years-old by the start of next season, receives an extension.

No brainer. Give Bam all the money. He can be the defensive anchor for a title team. Now the Heat just need a best player on offense.

ZechMerquise

nice well be picking at 15. will be crazy if we pick Nikola Topic, lol. so we have 2 nikolas

Big_guy305

Lol I don’t think he will drop down that far, we will have to get either Devin Carter, filipowski, or edey.

Reality Czech

Totally agree

ZechMerquise

hows the shooting of filipowski or edey? i mean, will either of them be a good partner with bam? or theyll just clog the lane even more

SunManFromDogBone

Miami can use some more clogging, rebounding, interior scoring and defense.

Big_guy305

Filipowski is the best shooter at the C spot. Edey will provide Rebound, size, and rim protection but will start his career on the bench.

Big_guy305

Filipowski would be the best fit next to bam in the draft, he shot 35 percent from 3, so he can play the 4 or 5. He’s still 7’0 250, so he would be more nimble then edey. I think he’s a hybrid of gobert and love. Also if we don’t get a big from a trade or an free agency, then I think he would be ready enough to start with bam. If we still have Jimmy and trade herro, dunc, and picks for Murray, we could do a big lineup of terry,Murray, butler, bam, powski. That would give us size, rebounding, rim protection, maybe top 3 D, and everyone can shoot 3’s, especially if bam continues getting better in that department. We could be a top 3 – 5 seed with that lineup. Also forgot to mention he’s probably the best passing 7 footer coming out with 2.8 assists a game(basically 3).

He could work.

SHADES OF Healthy Zach Collins

PLUSES

  • Fluid ball handler capable of running actions like a guard or a wing, whether it’s pick-and-rolls or handoffs as the receiving player. He can attack out of actions in a straight line or fluidly use crossovers and spin moves.
  • He has glue-guy skills on offense, often keeping the ball moving, relocating, screening, and cutting.
  • NBA coaches will love to use him in different actions because of his playmaking ability crossed with his quick decision-making. He can run the pick-and-roll or set hard screens then pop or roll. He is also already adept at running handoffs, so he could really thrive if surrounded by shooters. And as a hard-nosed defensive rebounder, he can start offensive possessions by bringing the ball up on his own.
  • Reliable post threat. He won’t get fed the ball in the NBA, but he can seal off a defender inside and score using drop steps and hook shots. Against switching defenses, his handle allows him to dribble from the perimeter into the post.
  • Projects as a reliable 3-point shooter because of his soft touch. The better his shot is, the more it’ll unlock his playmaking.
  • Plays hard on defense. He’ll take a charge, box out, and put his body on the line.
  • Coordinated defender who uses his hands to poke at the ball or disrupt actions on the perimeter. As a sophomore, he has more than doubled his blocks per game compared to his freshman year. Duke uses him in different pick-and-roll coverages, serving as the team’s defensive anchor.

MINUSES

  • Subpar scorer at the rim when faced with contact or length, largely due to his lack of strength. But he has the frame to handle much more muscle, so this skill should develop in time.
  • He needs to cut down on careless turnovers. Sometimes he gets too loose with his handle in the open floor, or he’ll force passes through windows that are shut.
Big_guy305

If we could get him, or Devin Carter, or maybe trade back some, and get edey. Then I would call the draft an A+.

ManilaHeat

Nuggs woke up tied their series. That looks like a west finals. Ant with 44 not enough. Denv showing better system and adjustment Minn relying on individual talent at least the past 2 games

heat for life

denv has jokic team player.edwards more of a one on one player .take the great team player anyday of the week

heat for life

man joker had lot of bounce tonight 7ft 280 thats impressive.after about 90 games played to have that energy wow hats off to him.like to know the guy that takes care of his big ass body maybe the heat should hire him and let him work with our oft injures players

SunManFromDogBone

That’s what a 3-time MVP looks like.
Anthony Edwards said the series was over after 2 games. Maybe now he realizes that it takes 4 games to win a series. Reminds me of the time Trae told Heat fans the game was over in Miami in December 2019 only to have the Heat come back to whip his skinny ass by 16 in O.T. Sometimes, the younguns need to learn a little humility by eating a little crow.

heat for life

minn okc their time is coming soon not quite yet.gotta taste some defeat first

SunManFromDogBone
ManilaHeat

And NY lost. Lost big. Played tired?

Big_guy305

It’s cuz thibs running them into the ground he got all the starters playing 40 plus minutes a game with a 7 man rotation.

ManilaHeat

Thibs old school 80s-90s dude. Where players are doing those kinds of minutes regularly. So maybe the soft ass generation story this decade is true. But that’s also the way I see it Thibs is running his guys to the ground ala Bulls tenure.

heat for life

og julius mitch out.take those players off your team

Big_guy305

Wow atl getting the first pick is crazy. Now do they try to build around Trae and Murray or do a full rebuild trading away Murray and trae?

Adam Silver must be cheating again!! It’s rigged! It’s a conspiracy! That Quin Snyder is a low down blankety blank! LOLOL!!

Big_guy305

LOL it gotta be, especially if pop old ass getting lucky last year with the first pick at the right time. Also fun fact that was the first hawks got the 1st pick since 1975.

It’s why it’s spo over pop for me tbh. Never tanked no matter who was on the team at any point whilst coaching. Don’t get me wrong pops a hof coach but tanked twice on purpose. Give spo his team from last year they win 25-30 on effort alone

Reality Czech

I’m a big Pop fan, but your point is well taken.

Big_guy305

Facts! You’re definitely spot on with that, I’ll take spo over pop too, and I’ll take spo over Kerr as well. Who walked into an all time great team like the warriors.

HHHFAN4Life

And Kerr coaching team usa is a joke

Big_guy305

If spo was coaching the team USA, they would be an actual powerhouse, and not an overrated team getting smacked up .

ManilaHeat

Tanking is the gm’s and owner’s strategy. Maybe a bit of the coach too. Imagine if Heat was out of the playoffs and in the Hawks position who would you guys get at #1?

Big_guy305

I would get clingan, he’s more nba ready offensively then sarr. Also perk says he has ceiling of Rudy gobert.

Excellent article on the “Jimmy Butler Situation.”
Should The Heat Offer A Lucrative Contract Extension To Jimmy Butler Or Trade Him: Pros, Cons, Final Decision

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nba/should-the-heat-offer-a-lucrative-contract-extension-to-jimmy-butler-or-trade-him-pros-cons-final-decision/ar-BB1mfljV?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=d6da7d59d7d6420da005f7c98a3a51a3&ei=21

Big_guy305

So there’s a rumor going around that Durant had conversation with OCHOCINCO, and supposedly Durant would consider a trade to miami…idk if that’s true or not, so take it for a grain salt. It is interesting to think about, I went on the suns blog, some want Jimmy, the majority rather trade kd to pellies. (my thoughts)but kd wouldn’t wanna go there, so probably a 3 or 4 team trade. Furthermore the minority said include jaquez, bam, duncan. Those are some of the suns thoughts, what do y’all think? Would you trade Jimmy for kd or would you try to do a 3 or 4 team to trade to try to pair kd with Jimmy, and bam…if possible?

Reality Czech

If I’m reading that right, they might ask for Butler, Bam, Jaquez, and Duncan for KD? Tell the Suns no problem, as long as they toss in Booker. Haha

Big_guy305

Lol ikr they’re delusional if they think they’ll get most of that for an aging, injury prone player.

vagibugi

They will ask for Bam or Butler. Butler for KD straight up?

Sundayafternoons

What about Butler and Herro for KD and whatever salary needs to be included?

Does that even move the needle for us?

heat for life

tys gonna be hard to deal u would have to attach him with jim.

SunManFromDogBone

As a former Suns fan, I think Phoenix is in a huge hole after paying Durant, Booker and 17ppg Bradley Beal a ton of money and have no bench. KD is just a high priced soulless mercenary with no loyalty looking for somehwere more desirable to land, like he has since he left Golden State. Sounds like a personal problem…his. Miami has 99 problems and he isn’t one of them.

Big_guy305

Yes, there gonna have to suffer through all of that thanks to James jones.

SunManFromDogBone

AMEN! He’s not exactly good at picking winners. Monty? Beal? Nurkic? WTF?

Big_guy305

Do you think budenholzer can get them out of the 2nd round? If they added some depth

SunManFromDogBone

If they go way over the cap…yes.

heat for life

need some josh hart type players that do the dirty work which is as good as scoring.josh hart is the best pure rebounder since the worm

ManilaHeat

8th seed banged up Miami Heat > 6th seed star studded Suns with not even a single win in the playoffs lol. they cant touch Bam. KD wants a superteam where he can just ride it out to a ring. imo he lost out on his supposedly first rodeo with Heat when he chose the Suns. as if Pat can offer something to the Nets that time haha. but that KD Jimmy straight up trade sounds intriguing. too bad we cant have a trial period

Big_guy305

I feel the same way as you lol, but only way I would do a trade for kd is if we can do 3 or 4 team trade, and somehow pair him with Jimmy and bam. I don’t he moves the needle much if trade him for jimmy.

ManilaHeat

Lots of good performances across the league. It will be a bit hard but not impossible for Bam to make all NBA dude deserves max but imo not (yet) the supermax. I believe that is reserved for players who can carry a team with little help. But that’s just me thank God lol. Heat should have room, $$$ that is, for a couple of good pieces to contend again. Or one big who can carry his own weight both ends. Anyways congrats in advance Mr. Adebayo! You personify Heat culture and hope you continue to improve. Specially in offense hehe

SunManFromDogBone

Pay the man! He gives 100% every game and is the team’s franchise player. He also deserves to have a younger team around him for the long haul. Hopefully, that is the direction Pat decides to go because what we have now isn’t good enough.

heat for life

bam should be your third best player.hes a great defensive player and rebound guy, need a big center and a 20 pt scorer, where have i heard that before

SunManFromDogBone

Bam is a very good two-way player. He should be second best player behind a guy like Mitchell.
