The Miami Heat needed to pick a direction this offseason, and it appears they’re leaning into their youth more heading into the 2025-26 season around Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, who will be due for an extension in October.
According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, developing their young core will be a priority for the short- and long-term future.
“According to people with direct knowledge, Miami’s intention is to ‘let our young guys show what they can do’ and see what this team looks like with Erik Spoelstra having a full training camp, with the Jimmy Butler distraction in the rearview mirror and with first-round pick Kasparas Jakucionis added to a core of young players that the organization believes has a high upside,” Jackson’s report read.
“It also believes all of its recent draft picks — Kel’el Ware, Nikola Jovic, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Pelle Larsson and Jakucionis — all have a chance to ‘be really good players’ and that at least some of their roles will become more significant, which it characterizes as ‘internal change.’
“As one source said, ‘we’re getting them in their developmental years’ and moving them into larger roles if they earn it. The point was made that it takes players five or six years to reach their prime, so Miami has no idea has good this young core can actually become.”
Miami’s made seven NBA Finals over the last two decades with three Larry O’Brien trophies; competing at all costs is ingrained in its DNA. Though we’ve entered a transitional phase months after they traded away a disgruntled Jimmy Butler (who spearheaded a pair of Finals appearances) at the deadline.
The Heat have an … interesting young core, spearheaded by second-year big Kel’el Ware, newly-drafted Kasparas Jakucionis and fourth-year wing Nikola Jovic. We laud the Miami Heat for being one of the best developmental organizations in the NBA–now it’s time to put that to the test with these spices in the cupboard.
That said, while the Heat exchanged Duncan Robinson for Simone Fontecchio’s expiring $8.3 million salary, there’s still work that needs to be done.
As it stands right now, the Heat are $5.5 million below the luxury tax, which team president Pat Riley has been open about not exceeding because of the onerous repeater penalties. However, of the 15 spots allocated for on the roster, 13 will be of players who were on last year’s team that was mercifully swept out of the first round.
If their plan is really to dip their toes into their youth, they still have tradable contracts in Andrew Wiggins, Haywood Highsmith and Kyle Anderson … oh, and Terry Rozier (learn from your mistakes!).
At the forefront of their priorities should be collecting as many assets as they can–be it expiring contracts, dispensable multi-year contracts and, most importantly, draft capital. Yes, that even means kicking the tires on trading Herro before you lock yourselves into a cumbersome long-term contract.
Explore the market as much as you can, and don’t be afraid to lump yourself into a three- or four-team trade if you’re able to rid a contract in exchange for draft capital or another asset!

From HoopsHype…
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future may not be decided until late summer
There was never any realistic chance of being in the Giannis discussion unless Bam and every good asset we have was included. So if the fo had any thoughts on this, move on to more realistic trade options.
Get to watch some Heat bb later. Besides Kaspar, Keshad, and Pelle, I look forward to seeing Vlad, Settle, Dainja, and Ballo.
I’m ready
I’ll be at work unfortunately, but I’ll watch later.
If its a superstar 30yo and below, I think Pat and co will put Ware on the table. Say Ant, or Giannis, or Donovan, or Tatum…
I’m enjoying the Ware stuff coming out today. How he appreciates how the Heat didn’t make him available in the Durant trade and wants to reward the Heat for believing in him. He’s up to 246 pounds from 230. The Heat want him up to 250.
Good stuff.
That’s definitely good stuff to hear that from him. Gaining all that weight will help battle stronger centers. I hope herro and jovic can gain some more muscle as well.
Yeah, we read that too. I thought he was the future of the franchise when we got him and I still feel that way.
Meant to say future at the center position
Shows he’s committed to becoming the best player he can.
Take him here in Manila and we’ll stuff the dude with adobo, lumpia, pansit, lechon! 250 in no time lol
and San Miguel.
What, no dinuguan?
Feeble smokescreen…oh let’s go with youth no no let’s talk Beal. More silliness. Am ready for summer league.
If they were trying to trade for Beal, I’d agree. But if he were to join on some minimum, or some midlevel, then I think it could be worth the risk. Teams love having those vets so the young guys can learn how to be a pro from them etc. Beal wouldn’t be a lotto ticket at his age, stats declined last two years, but it might be like a fantasy 5 or cash 3 jackpot. 😉
If it doesn’t come straight from Pat or Adam, or any fo dudes its just fans creating noise. I think Riles is waaaaay past Beal already. And even other players. Unless its a big, big discount.
You never look a gift horse in the mouth. If Heat can get Lillard or Beal for vet minimum, hell yes!
i dont think those players would agree…but as you said, hell yes!
I feel like this is talking out of both sides of their mouth. Either they’re building around Bam and Tyler, or they’re developing the young core.
If the Heat really think they have two all-stars that can win playoff games, then trade the young core for a third star and LFG. Since they didn’t do the Durant trade, I don’t think that’s how this team feels right now.
If that’s the case, just trade Tyler and Bam for young prospects and draft picks and commit to the rebuild. I’m not saying they need to pull a Sixersc and tank the next few seasons. I’m just saying, if Tyler and Bam aren’t good enough (and we have three straight years of play-ins to prove they’re not), just trade them for future prospects and let’s move on. Maybe keep one and trade the other. But damn, don’t run it back with this team. They’re just not good enough
They need a pack leader/alpha male scorer type and quality team depth. The depth comes from developing the younger players to replace the mediocre veterans, the draft and via trades and free agency.
The money saved from expiring veteran contracts is what will be used to secure a whale and another high quality rotation player.
theyre trying to improve team but their assets arent returning what they want aka theyve overvalued their players.they got pennies on the dollar for quitter.and those pennies are being dangled and just gonna bring back more pennies .so why make a trade just for the heck of it.wiggins is an ok player rc reminded he had a 40pt game.what the lakers would give us would not improve the team.the only way to fix mediocrity is bottom out aka okc houst bost .the combo of bam ty aint winning sht.no youngens are difference makers.kasper dude maybe havent seen him play nba.the others no diff makers.we are in a tough situation here.only one way out(allman bros) suk suk suk and wait till 2028 to be back.d wade type player gotten thru lottery thats the way to go.
All true and good points. And it may take till 2028 to change the situation.
ive seen the fins go from undefeated shula teams to mediocrity for 30 years.seen hurricanes dominate for 2 decades and 3 decades of mediocrity.dont want to see decades of mediocrity from a once great franchise.blow this sht up just rebuild it again and get another d wade sga type player only way to go for jewelry.
ty n bam combo is like having tua and ryan tannehill good enough for playoffs then a very quick exit, find the next mahomes josh allen sunman.u put in more time than riley does.u have all the ideas ,put pen to paper get your info down to pat riley court
Worse case scenario, they wait for contracts to expire.
Good analysis. It’s almost like they go back and forth, almost on a daily basis. They are trying but can’t bring in the player they want. But, they don’t want to say that so they say, “Now we are going with our youth.”
That makes a lot of sense.
So, we talked about Lillard. What if Beal gets bought out? Deal or no deal?
Sure. He isn’t injured. Veteran’s Minimum for 2 years and Suns pay the rest. Although I see wanting to go to a contender with a shot at a ring that needs a scoring punch. There’s a few of those.
I would do a deal, but suns would be stupid to buy him out. Might as well hold on to him for another year, ain’t like they a contender.
They probably want to do it for overall team vibes and morale. Beal was in so many trade rumors he’s probably like why the eff do I want to be here. The Suns in all their glory ruined their relationships with Durant and Beal trying to get Jimmy. Another franchise dealing with Jimmy’s destruction.
I mean I would get it, if Beal was actually messing with team morale, but reports are he’s has been trying his best, and giving effort. It’s not his fault they traded for him, that was on kd, and ishbia. Waving and stretching made sense for bucks, so they can keep giannis happy, plus they still have championship aspirations. It doesn’t make sense for suns cuz it ain’t like they going anywhere, and book wants to stay. I would get it if Beal Is causing trouble, but he isn’t. Furthermore now they’re talking about waiving and stretching him, so they can trade away grayson, nick, and O’Neal. Smh I see why Sunman left that team just a big mess, pay 20 mill + five years for nothing is stupid, and there fans think the same lol.
I’m annoyed. I posted about Beal at like 6-7 PM and the post is missing. So is one from HFL. Weird. Maybe Hanifan is cranky. 😉
Reports are Heat and Bucks interested. So it depends on what Beal wants. If he’s healthy, and joined the Bucks, they would probably be in a better position since they have Giannis. But he has been known to want to be in Miami for a while because he’s friends with Bam. The fit is what I would be concerned about. If he was willing to be the main scorer off the bench, and at times playing with Herro, even in a closing lineup, fine. But Herro-Beal backcourt would have me cautious going in to the season. You would definitely need Wiggins in that lineup.
I’ll let the team figure out the roster and opening a spot, but I would do it. The move to a team he wants to be on might rejuvenate Beal a bit. If everyone stayed healthy then I think they stay out of the lotto, something I want lol. But I can’t say the season wouldn’t be slightly more fun to follow.
I lost a post there too. I think it was maybe one from hfl after yours. Nothing controversial, but I could have written it better, so I don’t mind.
Maybe ICE spirited those comments away. They’re probably reading them in South Sudan right now.
For all you die hard fans who refuse to accept gap years or mini rebuilds etc., here are a few more options to keep you occupied until Saturday’s first Summer League game.
Despite the logical explanation of Miami’s current situation, there is still much speculation about what Miami’s options are, rather than viewing 2025-2026 as a gap year in exchange for a full youth movement. In the last few days, I have seen several trade/player acquisition proposals, including:
Proposed Trades:
John Collins PF/C on expiring contract 19.0 ppg / 8.2 rpg / 39.9 3 pt%
Age: 27 turns 28 in September (same age as Bam)
DeMar DeRozan SG/SF on two year contract 22.2 ppg/ 3.9 rpg/ 4.4 apg / 32.8 3pt%
Age: 35 turns 36 in August
Jonathan Kuminga SF/PF Restricted Free Agent 15.2 ppg/ 4.6 rpg/ 2.2 apg / 30.5 3pt%
Age: 22 turns 23 in October
Rui Hachimura PF on expiring contract (Age 27) 13.1 / 5.4 / 1.4 / 41. 3pt% plus
Dalton Knecht SG 3 year contract (Age 24) 9.1 / 2.8 / 0.8 / 37.6 3pt% plus
first round pick
Giannis Antetokounmpo PF on 2 year contract 30.4 ppg/ 11.9 rpg / 6.5 apg /22.2% 3pt%
(Age 30/ turns 31 in December)
Proposed Free Agent Signing:
Damian Lillard PG Free agent, 24.9 / 4.7 / 7.1 / 37.6 3pt%
Age 34 (turns 35 in July)
I would pull the trigger on Lillard by waiving Love and spreading his salary over five years. The other trades need to be carefully thought out if the goal is to build the foundation for a contending team beginning in 2026-2027.
*Expiring contracts: Rozier, Highsmith, Anderson and Love.
That’s an intriguing list but it would be like we would have to do two of them to truly get into the mix.
So, I will play along…First, that’s a pass on DeRozan or Lillard, I just don’t like the aging superstar idea. But, if we traded Rozier and HH for Collins and Wiggins for Kuminga that would be worth it as everyone would be pretty much in the same time frame and we could build from there. But it’s unlikely Golden Stare would take Wiggins back. Anyone else we could trade for Kuminga, maybe Herro? The first trade, for Collins, seems realistic on both sides.
Giannis’s availability is not established.
Here’s an excerpt from allucanheat
“Cold hard truth Heat fans can’t ignore after brutal start to free agency” (The Heat are not going to be good.)
“The Heat’s real plan
The messaging is that they’re going to embrace their young core this season, but we know what is truly taking place is that they’re just buying their time until next summer, when the team is expected to have much more financial flexibility and a full collection of tradable first-round picks at their disposal.
How do we know this? Well, it’s simple. The Heat can’t fully claim going the young route with a soon-to-be 28-year-old Bam Adebayo as their centerpiece. That doesn’t add up. Unless the Heat is suddenly going to trade Bam, which doesn’t appear to be the plan, Miami is clearly embracing a “gap” year with hopes of striking big in 2026.
Knowing the way the Heat operate and the fact that they’re never going to completely embrace a total rebuild, this makes much more sense. For one reason or another, they just refuse to publicize this line of thinking.
But even though there is reason for the fan base to have some hope for the future, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that Miami doesn’t project to be good this upcoming season. To manage expectations, it’s a realization that fans must quickly make.”
*Based on improvements thus far made by other Eastern Conference teams, Miami is projected to be a possible lottery team in 2025-2026.
“Miami projected to be a possible lottery team in 2025-2026.”
Sweet! Call me crazy, but I’ll keep saying it, the Heat are due for lottery luck. I think the league gave them the ol wink-wink for this season. 😉 😉
If they end up in the playoffs, well then a few of the young guys popped and that’s its own set of good news.
Always look on the bright side.
I am ALL in.
1. Patience is what this coming season will be all about.
2. Enough of distracting taunting trade talks and more focus on the youth.
3. Condition for trade, only if the apple falls on your lap.
It’s funny how the mentality changes when a team goes from buyer to possible seller. Riley’s phone must be ringing off the hook.
Looks like running it back to me…unless somehow Heat can dump Rozier & Wiggins. But it’ll be ok based on many past unheralded Heat teams providing a spirited, fun watch. Ready for the young guys to spread their wings !
Amen!
The Nuggets must be pissed. They thought they had their Joker backup in Valaciunas, but he’s deciding to take an offer to finish career in Euro league. Ouch.
camjohnson bruce brown and another player they got.dandre jordans there
That isn’t enough.
joker murray cam the guy with breads brown braun they got couple 2 wayers youngens in east they would def be in finals.that westconf might have the 8-10 best teams
Rockets are trying to get under the 1st apron cutting Landale. Some suspect they might try and trade Cam Whitmore. I’m sure they’ll try to get a first, but if for some reason he can be had some cheaper way, and we’d probably need to include another team, that might be a young non-Kuminga guy to bring in.
Without selling the ranch. Otherwise, they can always waive and stretch someone.
All I know is I’m over the disappointment of the letdown from change is needed to little change occurring. I shouldn’t have been surprised as I saw the situations we were in and it’s not like I didn’t see how difficult it was going to be to make many impactful changes. And I don’t hurt anymore as I’ve accepted our fate. So, all there is to do is sit back, watch, and hope for the best. At least we are doing the best thing we can do now in the given situation. It’s not going to be about wins and losses anymore. It’s going to be about player growth and evaluation. Let’s be mellow, enjoy the process, take a gummy, or pour a strong one, and have the best time we can. We are still lucky to have pro basketball in south Florida. This too shall pass. And things could be totally better by 2027. And maybe tickets will be cheaper this year.
Go Heat! And have a happy Fourth of July!
I’m ready for cheaper tickets. My sons love going to games. Sheesh.
Happy 4th!
lol
“It’s not going to be about wins and losses anymore. It’s going to be about player growth and evaluation.”
Ditto .
Happy 4th!
This too will pass.
Since they are leaning in to youth, let’s play a guessing game. Rank the following scenarios from most likely to least likely to happen.
1) Kel’el Ware Sophomore Slump
2) Jaime Jacquez Jr Plays More Like Rookie Year
3) Kaspar Has All-Rookie Season (1st or 2nd team)
And we’re off!
#3
3-2-1?
Yes. I think Ware will be better this season.
I’ll go 3 , 2 , 1.
I say three is possible, which would be awesome. The other two less so. IMO, Ware is much much more likely to play better than worse. And JJJ, let’s hope for the best. His career is on the line here.
3-0-0.
I see what you did there lol
None of the above. Everybody is gonna have a great year! If only half of them do, we are ahead of the game.
bam is a third option on a good team,tyler is a 6th man 15 mins a game.
An all star and former 6moy getting 15 minutes a game? You’re delusional.
For comparison, Haywood Highsmith averaged 17.9 minutes per game his second season when he was averaging 33% on two 3 pointers per game. lol sheesh
Definitely delulu, smoking some bad stuff, or lost a step commenting. 15 mins a night for a player that averages basically 25- 5- 5 and while being your best shooter is crazy talk.
Halfway in the season, he was suggesting Herro was playing as good or better than any sg in the league. Then Herro leveled off and had a rough playoff series because Cleveland knew he was the only offensive threat.
From one of best in league to 8th man off the bench. Sounds legit.
when ty is fresh hes very good offensively.he wears down .on okc he wouldnt play un minuto same with ind.cant guard cant play when u going to realize that sir
luka cant guard but hes luka joker not great on d but hes best player .ty shoots alot pumps his pts up.shooting % below average .dont get the infatuation with him hes one on one player .hhh4l gets it u others dont see hes nothing special
If it was Trae, Ja, Clarkson etc., it wouldn’t be an issue?
Enough downer shit heat. Focus on the young guys and the future. Live in the moment. Enjoy what is in front of you rather than dwelling on what isn’t
But he is the first option on the defensive side of the ball. For somebody who is always insisting on two-way players, you seem to forget offense is only 1/2 of Bam’s game.
