Prayers up for Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra and his family, as the breaking news hit early on Thursday morning of a reported fire that severely damaged his home in Coral Gables, Florida.
The story was initially covered by local Florida news, and later confirmed by several other media outlets. Although there were thankfully no injuries reported, the devastating fire completely destroyed the home. Spoelstra had reportedly bought the five-bedroom house in December of 2023, with extensive work done following the purchase.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had iterated that the flames were “as tall as the trees.” There was some drone footage that showed the damage to the house, leading to it being left in charred rubble. Spoelstra was seen walking outside of the property during the fire in complete disbelief while the rescue teams worked diligently to clean up.
The Heat and Spoelstra landed back in South Florida from their Wednesday night game in Denver against the Nuggets shortly after 5:00 am this morning. According to AP news, “Spoelstra arrived at the home shortly after the plane landed, with several fire crews working to try to contain the blaze.” Fire officials noted that “the home was unoccupied” when it had broke out around 4:30 am. The cause of the massive fire is still unknown, and could not be confirmed for weeks as these officials begin an investigation on the unfortunate incident.
Spoelstra had recently hosted a team outing at his home just days before the start of the 2025-26 season. Miami’s next game is set for Friday evening against the Charlotte Hornets at home in the team’s first Emirates NBA cup matchup.
Wishing nothing but the best for Coach Spo amid the terrible news.

Tough time for spo, First the divorce, fallout from crybaby butler, now this smh. My prayers up for spo .
I’m interested to see how/why it happened. Arson?
That’s really sad, tragic. Can you imagine coming home from a long trip and finding out you have no home to go to and probably lost most of your possessions too?
That’s the thing. You can always replace a structure, but not the memories it contained. Regardless of how anyone likes him as a coach, he clearly seems to be a decent, genuine person. I’m sure the entire organization, league, and fans will be very supportive.
I m sure Spo has resources to build or buy another house. I m not sure how league or fans can help make home home again.
I meant emotionally supportive, not financially. You can replace a structure but not the keepsakes it contained.
