With injuries to both Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, multiple players in the Miami Heat’s rotation have been forced to step up.
One of those players has been guard Pelle Larsson, who’s appeared in all 10 games, including starting each of the last seven. And while he may be bumped to the bench once Tyler Herro returns, depending on who’s healthy, Larsson’s has showcased why he belongs in the rotation long-term.
Why Pelle Larsson must continue to stick in rotation:
There hasn’t been a set or “target” date for a return, yet, but we are vastly approaching Herro’s 8-to-12 week timeline that was originally set in September.
While the Heat’s bench has been one of the NBA’s best, someone will have to fall on the axe for who drops out of the rotation — and that shouldn’t be Larsson.
The 24-year-old is averaging 9.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists on 57.4 percent shooting from the floor, 34.5 percent from 3-point range and 80.0 percent from the charity stripe. In his seven starts, however, Larsson has averaged 12.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
As I’ve belabored before, Larsson is the perfect glue guy. His infectious energy — both offensively and defensively — as well as his timely cutting, secondary playmaking and efficient shot-making have been crucial to start the season. He’s also cut back on the fouls (his whistle as a rookie was terrible), while finishing and ball-handling have continued to improve.
You need guys who aren’t afraid to get grimy on the hardwood. Larsson is still fine-tuning his all-around skillset, but he’s not afraid to draw charges and put his body on the line. You can’t have that wasted on the bench, especially when he’s been one of your best guards.
I believe Larsson has forced Erik Spoelstra’s hand, but it will eventually be up to the longtime head coach to decide which player(s) are going to have to take a step back in their deepened rotation.

Pelle stepped into the starting line-up, and that is quite a step up from being a solid rotational player as you are up against the other teams best, and he handled himself admirably. There are a few players whose presence is more valuable than their stats, even if they have decent stats. Bam is certainly one, but I think Davion, Dru and Pelle also fall into that category. Pelle has the right physical skills, his combination of strength and finesse is correct for his body type, and he has the right demeanor, relentless and unflappable, and a certain toughness and fearlessness. And he’s learning and improving before our eyes.
If the draft was re-done today, I believe he would definitely be a first round pick, possibly top 20.
Definitely first round.
