Could Tyler Herro be returning next week?

The return is near for Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro!

When it was initially reported in September that Herro was undergoing surgery, the timeline the team projected was “around eight weeks.” Well, we are now at that eight-week deadline, and Herro began practicing with the team on Sunday.

His return his near, but how near? According to the Associated Press’ Tim Reynolds, Herro’s return “seems like” Monday, Nov. 24 against the Dallas Mavericks.

If Herro returns Monday, he would still be eligible to meet the 65-game minimum for postseason awards. Though he wouldn’t be able to miss a single game for the remainder of the season.

Tyler Herro should, theoretically, fit Heat’s new fast-paced style:

Led by Norman Powell (for 12 games), Jaime Jaquez and Bam Adebayo (9 games), the Heat have patched it up quite well without Herro. But Wednesday’s rock fight against Golden State or their Oct. 30 loss to the San Antonio Spurs were prime examples of games where they missed their one-time All-Star.

Herro had a career year last year, averaging 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists on very good efficiency. There will likely be an adjustment period with him in this new offense, but the 6-foot-5 guard should, theoretically, fit well offensively.

Miami will play two games away from home against Chicago and Philadelphia before returning home for a four-game homestead. Monday’s matchup against Dallas will be the second night of a back-to-back.

Not gonna happen. Since you have been in a betting mood lately, I wish I could bet you on this. It would be like taking candy from a baby. Herro will not be playing 15-20 minutes! Bank it! Simone plays 19 minutes a game. Do you, in your wildest imagination, think Herro would play less minutes than Simone?

I agree with Sharkey and 30 comments below. I believe the fast pace is well suited to Herro’s style. I think the half court plodding offense of past years hindered, not helped, his production. Powell is a decent defender. Ware, Bam, Wiggins are all plus defenders. The same is true for Jaquez, Pelle, Davion, and Dru,

I believe that when Herro returns we will be a better team. His shooting and ability to create his own shot will help our offense, especially on those nights when other players are struggling to score. We have had several such games. Having Herro available for those games, we might have as well won them. Some are worried about the defense, but since our roster is quite deep now, he doesn’t have to play 40 minutes per game. He doesn’t even have to start (although he likely will). I think the best solution would be to be flexible with the rotation and adjust based on who we play against and also during the game based on individual performances. If we need more defense, I can imagine him getting less minutes. But I am sure Spo knows what to do.

That’s probably right. His outside shooting and higher level of ball handling and creating his own shot than most others on the team will be helpful against the zone defenses we have been facing lately. Unlike Simone, he can drive past you if he doesn’t take the three, and unlike Jaime, he has the speed and better handles to penetrate even when the zone is set up after the opposition slows us down. And, not having to play as much, and having better defenders around him, will allow us to hide his defensive liabilities more than before.
