It’s now or never with Heat for Giannis Antetokounmpo

As many have speculated over the last several weeks and months, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks was not for long — whether he was dealt ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline or in the summer.

Eight days ahead of the trade deadline, we received another hint that he would be dealt sooner rather than later.

“Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is ready for a new home ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline, as several teams have made aggressive offers to the Milwaukee Bucks, who are starting to listen,” ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported. “Multiple teams have received a sense that the Bucks are more open than ever to Antetokounmpo offers between now and the deadline, league sources said.

“Antetokounmpo has informed the Bucks for months that he believes the moment has come to part ways after 12-plus years together, making a trade increasingly possible.”

The train was always heading in this direction.

The Bucks don’t have any tradable first-round picks until 2032 to salvage this unsalvagable situation. As much as I like Ryan Rollins, they don’t have a great crop of young talent relative to the rest of the NBA. They will be littered in cap H-E-double hockey sticks if they plan to build a contender for as long as Damian Lillard’s $22.5 million dead cap is on their books.

It’s time for them to part ways. Giannis deserves a chance to compete for at least another NBA title, while the Bucks deserve to be saved from … well, themselves.

The glass has broken — or, at the very least, the cracks are visible in multiple directions.

Where do the Heat factor into this?! Well, one of their worst-kept secrets is that, when Antetokounmpo was made available, they were going to be interested. And multiple reports have since confirmed that interest.

Why it’s now or never with the Miami Heat for Giannis Antetokounmpo:

We know their track record with pursuing stars.

However, it’s now or never for the Heat with Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Dating back to 2020, the Heat’s affinity for Antetokounmpo’s been well-documented. It hasn’t waned since. They are rightfully placing all of their eggs in the Giannis Antetokounmpo basket — so much so that they will look the other way for anyone and everyone if it jeopardizes their chances at landing the two-time MVP.

While it made sense why the Heat didn’t want to invest all of their assets in certain stars, such as Kevin Durant last summer, the same can’t be said for Antetokounmpo. And the Heat likely know that.

If they try to wait until the summer, there could be plenty of consequences.

Currently, Miami only has two tradable first-round picks (2030, 2032) plus three swaps in 2026, 2029 and 2031. Additionally, they have an intriguing young asset in Kel’el Ware, plus a combination of Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, Norman Powell, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Terry Rozier and Nikola Jovic (poison pill), among others, that they can move.

While the Miami Heat would unlock one extra pick (2026) on draft night, the same can be said for every team around the NBA. One could assume that a disappointed team — particularly out West (Houston, San Antonio, etc.) — who may not be in the market now will make a big push during the summer. New York, another widely-reported Antetokounmpo suitor whose also devoid of attractive assets at this current juncture, could also be added to that mix.

Only one team is happy at the end of the season. And a desperate organization that’s ready to take the next step will make a push for Antetokounmpo, one who likely has more assets than Miami.

Thus, the Heat must beat them to the punch — now. Send the house. Antetokounmpo, Adebayo (they won’t move him) plus a bunch of scraps likely isn’t falling out of the play-in anyway. You would need a plan to get them out of that, but I would trust the Heat infinitely more than Bucks general manager Jon Horst to build a team around the nine-time All-Star.

Now is your time, Miami. It’s put up or shut up time. Either s–t or get off the pot. You made your bed with the decisions you made — or haven’t made. But now it’s time to strike when the iron’s hot … before it inevitably gets hotter and out of your reach.

It’s an act of desperation which will never happen. Giannis will stop any trade here because to acquire him we would have to weaken this team so much we couldn’t contend, even with him. The inconvenient truth is we are in no position to acquire a Giannis. And, the Bucks are posturing themselves for a max package for him. No one is going to get a bargain this time.

Holding my breath. Hopefully team won’t be completely gutted. Wonder what the gutless Silver will do with the Rozier situation? So far…quiet like a mouse.

Yup. Just in time for him to walk in and pick up his Lotto check for $26,643,031 for doing absolutely nothing and walk right back out. Kind of like NBA players who spend the majority of their time on the injured list (especially around the playoffs). Nice gig if you can get it.

Plus, if he’s cleared he should be “good to go” as a free agent who is no longer preoccupied about possibly spending time in the “big house”.

I saw a 3 team trade on youtube. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket…for years to come.

Miami receives:
Giannis, Buddy Hield, Warriors 2027 1st rd pick

Golden State receives:
Andrew Wiggins, Dru Smith

Milwaukee receives:
Herro, Kuminga, Ware, Jaquez, Jakucionis, Miami 1st rd picks 2026, 2028, 2030, 2032

That would pretty much wipe out Miami’s youth movement now and for years to come…for one player.

Note: In NBA Trade Machine this trade scenario reflects no change in winning percentages for Miami or Milwaukee and -11 wins for Golden State. I think those numbers are bogus, but I have no clue what the correct projections should be.

Meanwhile, Miami still has to decide what to do with Powell, Fontecchio and Johnson. Heat can trade Powell for a pick and an expiring contract or keep him and extend him for 3-4 years. Furthermore, since Miami is trading away 6 players and getting back only 3 (possibly 4 if Giannis’ brother Thanasos is thrown in) it would have vacancies to fill with minimum salary players (e.g., Gardner, Goldin, released players, etc).

Any thoughts?

I don’t like it, that trade makes weaker, we lose all of good young talent. While still having jovic, and rozier. Also losing dru and wiggy, and still don’t have a back up big. Riley would need to retire after making that trade.

There is an alternative 3-way trade for Ja Morant fans.

Miami gets Ja Morant and Warriors 2027 pick

Memphis gets: Kuminga, Fontecchio, Hield

Golden State gets: Wiggins and Dru Smith

In this scenario, Miami would have 1st rd picks from 2026-2032 which would provide much more ammo this summer that can be used in a trade for Giannis or another ss. This doesn’t include a possible return of its 2027 pick from Charlotte through a favorable NBA dispute resolution process or via legal action.

I actually like this deal better.

The lesser of two risks/potential evils. The Heat could always just trade Wiggins and Smith for Kuminga, Hield and 2027 pick. That would give the team 1st round picks from 2026-2032.

Miami could then extend Powell and try to trade for a big before the deadline or pick up a big off the NBA Waiver Wire. Some bigs are usually released after the deadline. Any player picked up off the Waiver Wire can compete in the playoffs if they are signed before March 1.

Giannis is under contract for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons, with a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. He will be eligible to sign a 4-year $275M supermax contract extension (nearly $70M per season) on October 1, 2026 which would run through the 2030-31 season when he will be 36.

What is Riley going to do with Powell? Trade deadline is in 8 days.

I’m shocked there are no comments yet! No Giannis comments? No comments about Riley being over the hill? No comments about the Heat needing to get out of mediocrity?

Personally, I’m neutral on Giannis. He’s absolutely one of my favorite players and I’d love to have him on the Heat. BUT, do I think that makes us a contender if we sell the farm for him? I’m not sold on us being able to compete with the likes of OKC anytime soon. Detroit is better than us AND has a younger core. Boston is playing better than us now even with Tatum out. Could we potentially make a Finals with Giannis and Bam? Perhaps, we did it twice with Bam and Jimmy Buckets. But would that be sustainable?

What’s the long-term goal? A core of Giannis, Bam, and.. Norm Powell? How long will that last? I fear we’d eventually be in the same boat that we were in with Jimmy. Our best player potentially missing chunks of time during the regular season leaving the Heat scrapping for a mid-seed. And it’s not like Giannis hasn’t been dealing with injuries in the playoffs.

I don’t buy all the media and fan hoopla about Riley being over the hill and the Heat NEEDING to do something right now. We have one of the best coaches in basketball and one of the best scouting and development teams. I enjoy seeing us continue to develop our assets. I’d much rather keep accumulating assets. I’m probably in the minority here though…

Whatever Riley does, he should NOT trade away the future, the best of Miami’s younger players AND their future draft picks for Gianni’s and salary fillers. If they do that and a single injury happens to Gianni’s that puts him out long term, they would be screwed for years to come. I’ve seen trade scenarios where they get Ware, Jaquez, Jakucionis, Rozier, Kuminga plus 4 draft picks, if Miami can get 2027 pick from Golden State along with Kuminga and Hield for Wiggins.

Ha, you summed up my thoughts in much less words! Would I be MAD if we got Giannis? Nah. Would I prefer us not to? Yup! Can’t help but look at the downsides there…

Honestly I can see both sides of the argument, I’m leaning towards not selling the future, but if it happens it happens. I still think Riley has juice left, so hopefully if we do get him….it won’t cost the whole future. I want to hold on 1 or 2 of the young guns, and let jovic get traded. But also for us to keep at least 2 of jjj,Larsson, kaspar. The will have to part ways with Davion or wiggy.

I’m fine with the Heat betting the house on Giannis. They’ve been cautious over the past few years, holding on to young guys and draft picks, and where has it gotten them? They’re one of the better play-in teams every year. They haven’t finished higher than 8th since 2021, and haven’t made it out of the first round since 2022. This ain’t a run of the mill all-star we’re talking about. This is Gainnis! Two-time league MVP, one-time Finals MVP and NBA Champion. Go get him! Do whatever it takes and figure out the rest later.

If it doesn’t work out and Riley and Miami face plant, we can always change our loyalties and follow the Bucks (Miami North) instead. After all, they will have Ware, Jaquez and Jakuciones plus 4 Miami draft picks to start with.

If it doesn’t work out, they trade Giannis and Bam and commit to the rebuild. Seems better than finishing 8th every year, no?

If Giannis breaks down, no team is going to want to give the Heat their young players plus 3-4-5 draft picks for a $70M a year player. Bam probably worth a couple of picks and a good young player or two and an expiring contract, presuming he stays healthy.

Yes, its now or never.

Herro, Rosier,Ware, JJJ, Larsson and 2 picks for Antetekumbo and Portis works.

Powell, Greek, Bam, Mitchell, Wiggins starts.
Kas, Jovic, Simone, Portis, Dru is a solid bench. We would need a player or two from buyout market. Maybe Middletton?

Love it. I would like to keep one of JJJ/Larsson, but obviously not a deal breaker. And it will probably cost extra picks/swaps

I feel the same way, but we still don’t know what silver will do with rozier, if he in the trade. so I do hope we can keep one of two, and send jovic instead. But if we’re getting Portis too, then can’t be too mad at losing jjj,Larsson.

Milwaukee isn’t giving up Giannis and Portis for that proposed offer. Portis had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists last night vs 76ers. Gonna have to put a little more meat on that bone.

Big_guy305

Houston is out of the race, so I think that gives us a better chance against the Knicks, unless they wanna give up mikal,og,and hart. I also think we got better cap space to make it an easier transaction. Only thing Is we gotta give up bam or ware. Riley made it known that bam is untouchable. So ware will most likely be 1 of the assets traded, which is very sad to see, but when a SS the caliber of the freak becomes available…that is the way. Riley the ball is in your court, don’t mess up .

As long as we can hold on to 1 or 2 of jjj,Larsson, kaspar. Then I’m good, but I think his recent injury will make him a Lil bit cheaper hopefully, plus bucks want to do right by him.

hell yes! Go make this happen!

I was out here defending the Heat for multiple seasons while everyone else complained. I think they had to navigate a tricky Jimmy Butler situation and you can’t ask them to win the East every year. They had some good success in the past few years.

But this year and last year, I’ve started to run out of patience.  This feels like a mediocre team that will never be good enough to compete for a title, and doesn’t really have a plan for how to get better.

This is it. This is the plan. Go get Giannis. Pair him with Bam and Norm. This team has plenty of depth to replace the other pieces that they trade for Giannis. Give them all the picks, who cares. LFG!
