Davion Mitchell signs two-year, $24 million extension with Heat

Davion Mitchell isn’t going anywhere.

Days before he was expected to enter restricted free agency for the first time in his career, the Miami Heat re-signed Mitchell to a two-year, $24 million deal, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Saturday.

The Heat extended the qualifying offer to the former No. 9 overall pick earlier this week, worth roughly $8.7 million. I predicted that Mitchell would land anywhere between $10-12 million, so a two-year deal with a $12 million AAV is a reasonable contract for both sides.

Mitchell, 26, was one of the Heat’s best players since he was acquired from the Toronto Raptors ahead of the trade deadline in the Jimmy Butler blockbuster.

In 30 games, he averaged 10.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game, shooting 50.4 percent from the floor, 44.7 percent from 3-point range and 70.2 percent from the free-throw line. He was one of their best playoff performers too, despite the team being mercifully swept in the first round to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He was one of, if not the Heat’s best point-of-attack defenders, a very efficient 3-point shooter and showcased improved playmaking down the stretch of last season. It was imperative to bring him back because of his point-of-attack defense alone, but he was the quintessential embodiment of how the organization’s built its foundation on toughness, grittiness and heart.

Miami now has four point guards on its roster, including newly-drafted Kasparas Jakucionis and Dru Smith, who the Heat extended a two-way qualifying offer to. What moves do you want the Heat to make once free agency arrives?! Let us know in the comments!

Duncan’s situation will have to be resolved in the next few days unless the Heat moves someone else. Avoiding the repeater tax will force the Heat’s hand. Riley is in a bit of a pickle. Going to be interesting how he deals with it.

Duncan just declined his option, so now he will become a free agent.

Lezzgo DMitch!! Hmmm…i think im down with this so-called gap year. If there’s no reasonable trade for a star player. It may be a good problem but what if this team suddenly perform? Say win 45+ games get to the second round…or more? I know…they might still need a go-to-guy specially in endgames.

That’s what DeRozan is. A closer. If Heat can get him for a couple of players they should go for it. One hell of a 6th man. No picks unless they throw in Carter too. Rozier, Jaquez and pick for DeRozan and Carter or Ellis.

I wouldn’t give up a pick for Derozan. If it was because of Carter, we just drafted a PG and signed Davion, so I think the Carter angle is out. Rozier & JJJ and that’s it. I think selling them on JJJ getting back to rookie form is the selling point, plus they get to split up the Bulls 2.0 lineup with him and Lavine.

I wish they would have signed him up for 3 or 4, but I’m glad they signed him. He probably could have gotten more elsewhere but would not have been happy. He’s a fan favorite in Miami, whether he starts or subs. Now Heat just needs a good 2-way SG to replace Herro.

100% with you on this one. Any 2nd or 3rd options behind Murray?

I am *furious* at whoever chose not to title this article “Miami decides to slide into DM.”

So I went on kings blog after mitchell got paid, to see what they thought about it, but came away with something different. One guy said they would trade derozan away for jaquez,Duncan, and pick. Would yall do that trade?

Pick? No way. Do they think Derozan is young? I’m certain the Heat would not entertain that idea since they didn’t even offer future picks for KD, only this years 20th.

I still have a little hope for JJJ, but would trade him if it was between him and Niko.

Future second maybe. But we seem to be pretty set at pg, so don’t really need him.

Yea, I was thinking the same, if I do it, gotta be for a future 2nd. Also I think he would play more sg or sf, over pg. But I agree with you.

Yeah, but first this isn’t a real offer. And, if it’s just for a second I doubt the Kings would do it.

Yes ik it ain’t a real offer, but I found it interesting, and I wanted to hear yall take on the matter.

No pick. Rozier, Jaquez and a bag of chips. I think Heat have all their second round picks until 2035.

Really good news on Davion.

From BR:
Given that Curry and Butler are both due at least $54 million, the Warriors are certain to surpass the projected $154.6 million salary cap.
The only question is which tax level Golden State stays under.
Realistically, the Dubs are probably going to fly past the luxury tax ($187.9 million). The likelier targets in play—especially given the franchise’s history—are the first ($195.9 million) or second ($207.8 million) apron.
The summary? Golden State has minimal flexibility to piece together an uncertain roster, but there’s no question it will maximize the budget.
The more complicated one is Jonathan Kuminga.
As he enters restricted free agency, Golden State needs to determine how much of a contract they are willing to offer—and match. There’s a real possibility the Warriors end up orchestrating a sign-and-trade to avoid losing him for nothing.

Warriors give Kuminga a qualifying offer, so it’s officially on to see who offers him a better deal and if Warriors try to match.

Glad he’s back, glad it’s not a long term deal. Still the value feels kinda bad given his best run of his career came here. Hope I’m wrong about the value and he’s well worth it

In today’s NBA, that is an absolute bargain.

It’s an absolute bargain if he’s the Davion who played for Miami.

If he’s the the Davion who averaged 5 ppg, with a 35% rate from 3…he probably isn’t.

The run in Miami was his best shooting by far in his young career.

Still reasonable considering Gabe Vincent earns the same and Mitchell’s defense alone makes him the better player. Mitchell is not a slacker, so I think he will put the work in to at least be the player we saw here. Anyway, let’s hope so.

On a 2 year deal he can absolutely cash in big, so I fully expect his best.

Now that he’s in the fold the real juicy moves are next.

Good money spent, glad they did it before he go into free agency, or the price would’ve been higher. Young ,talented 2 way player. He still has room to grow and officially part of the core. We need more players like him.
