Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro had the worst year of his career in 2025-26. And while the 6-foot-5 guard has been the center of trade rumors since his rookie season, there are breadcrumbs to suggest that last season may have been his last with the Miami Heat.
Even though he’s set to be a $33 million expiring contract this summer, there are reasonable concerns about the Heat’s ability to move them. One anonymous East executive explained why to Heavy On Sports’ Sean Deveney.
“We used to love expiring contracts because you could clear your books and get into free agency, but now, free agency is dead, and you need to keep salary slots alive to make trades,” the executive said. “So, before, no one wanted to trade for Tyler Herro because of his contract was too big and no one trusted his style of play, he is a defensive liability, all of that. Now, no one wants him because of the injuries and because the contract is expiring and because he is a little bit disgruntled and all of that.”
The idea to trade Tyler Herro is easier said than done:

Herro, who appeared in a career-low 33 games last season, underwent minor offseason foot surgery earlier this month. He didn’t fit into the Heat’s new offense, nor did he fit alongside guard Norman Powell, whose skill set is duplicative of his own. Herro averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists on 48.0 percent shooting and 37.8 percent from 3-point range.
Both sides should go their separate ways. However, the prospects of selling low on one of your highest-paid players, even in a contract year, when he’s underperformed in the postseason and whose archetype is no longer valued in the NBA, is easier said than done. Of course, it would likely require them to be willing to take back an undesirable package — relative to how he was viewed even two seasons ago. And if we know anything about the Heat, they’re most urgent when they feel like they can win the deal.
Herro best fits on a potential contender, as a secondary shot creator surrounded by above-average-to-elite defenders. Miami doesn’t fit that criteria. Among the teams that do — with a pressing need for shot creation — include the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves or Houston Rockets, which I detailed here.
Miami will need Herro’s contract if it wants Giannis Antetokounmpo as a salary filler. We’ll see whether the Heat can deal the 26-year-old guard — be it for Antetokounmpo or something else — or if he will be with the organization for his 8th season, which may do more harm than good for both sides.

Kind of sad that Ty gets treated like he does by the press. But, making plenty of cash to alleviate the pain. The problem never was as much his ability, as much as his oversized contract. Point the finger at the idiot who gave him the bag. For less money, he’s quite tradable. And yes, it rankles me that we are stuck with him and Jovic. Any other GM who didn’t have a nepotistic relationship with the owner, would be gone for those two contracts alone.
2015 heat loves him.nepostic where do u get these words from.beach high ed served u well.go hi tides
I made that one up.
how are we gonna build a team to beat okc or spurs next 5-7 years.man if pat would have gotten jimmy little more help i could have met rc by now
If they had done the opposite of what you wanted, we might have had Flagg right now.
i didnt realize what frauds bam n ty were my bad, nothing else id rather do at night than watch heat playoff hoops

of course theyre drafted lebron.mickey$$ not into tanking not good for biz.after all it is a biz to mickey.that comes before winning.u can acquire ss also like teams have done.thats what we’re all waiting for our next brunson sga luka hali..u can draft high forever and get no where unless theres a no brainer wemby lebron type look at atl wash char theyve been drafting high forever.need a better younger gm is quickest way for success.
At least Wolves got 2 wins. Thanks to Wemby injury and then getting disqualified. Could’ve been a sweep.
champagne makes that 3 and wemby not disqualified a sweep
Outrebounded 60-29?? Good grief!
rudy wemby was like bam joker few years ago/
Spurs vs OKC the “real” finals. Any east team would just be happy representing their conf.
yes
plumlee has zero talent but when your 7 ft tall u got a shot to cash lots ck$$
Quite a few “Plumlee types” all over the NBA.
Typical “no one wants him” article because of the fact Herro has an expiring contract, which has been known all year. Same as Ja, replace Herro with Ja and it’s the exact same article citing the team/management perspective. Same reason Anthony Davis who is an All-NBA player was traded for just two first round picks, and one was from OKC so basically only one first, because he has an expiring contract.
stop no one wants him but u
Herro signs a 4/80 contract and the same anonymous exec is saying Herro is the best contract in the league. Literally this is all about money, specifically saving the owners money.
Specifically, it is about not overpaying for a one-way player who is hurt when you need him, chokes at crunch time and is targeted for exploitation because of his poor defense. 4/80 to come off the bench ok. 4/160 to start, not so much.
4/80 would be a very good deal for him. I still say he can help the right team and a new start would probably help him. Yup 4/160 totally out. 4/120 not terrible for the right team, not Miami.
What’s the over under for 150?
250 u mean? or 150 for one team
For one team. only 139.
Minny waving the white flag?!
30+ down in 4th quarter? Definitely.
ko sighting
antman congrats spurs at 8 minute mark wtf he doing thats bs
Ant before gm6: not worried down 2-3
Ant teammates: can we worry now?
ant goes home goes on internet sees lots zeros in bank account alls good
which champagne was a heater this spurs guy best shooter they have
u think lebron thinking of playing with wemby getting another ring
Never say never, but I don’t see that happening.
i think la wants to use his cap room for some younger players.dont think he goes back to cleve again.how bout the warriors
Possibly Warriors. But I still think Cleveland.
i cant think of an athlete that has played 3 diff times for the same team might have happened.james donovan both max guys.spurs could prob fit him under mickeys apron
Michael Beasley played for the Miami Heat in three distinct stints over his NBA career
this carter bryant has played bad every game they should go with harrison barnes
Watch more Spurs games, he’s a 20 year old rookie and already one of the best wing defenders they have
true but all he does is foul cant shoot for sht looked bad in this series, but i dont watch any other team but heat
okc spurs who u taking rc.
I already answered that. And you mentioned that you don’t respect my opinion all that much anyway so what’s the point?
u take shots at me all the time its sports no biggy.its not life its entertainment.youve been wrong on some things just like me.sm always right
I never thought Detroit would get this far. I’ve made other mistakes as well. And everyone here, including SM can make mistakes. He’d be the first one to tell you.
suns lebron we are dunc and ty
Oh stop it heat…You’re making me blush.
he’d be btw .i have not caught him in to many mistakes rc hes usually on the $$ thats why i nicknamed him lebron.
I saw something special coming after Detroit went from
If Pistons had Herro starting and Duncan coming in off the bench, they could won more games. Their defense is good enough to cover for them.
Maybe there’s room for a trade there this summer? Beef Stew, Holland, a filler and a pick sounds about right.
Ha Ha Ha! No I too make mistakes once in a while. Just 3 years ago I made the mistake of ordering red wine with seafood.
Lol this made my morning
Yes
good to hear manila your a great heat fan.
shame shame on the nba for having to pay for these games, lots of people in usa cant watch playoffs wtf .fu greedy sports
luke kornett best backup c in nba svg says ill take paul friggin reed
antman needs help arod randle has been a major dissapointment
Didn’t you just recently say how strong Randall was? And how good he was?
the better competition is it will make u look worse thats sports rc
But you said it in this series.
spurs had 10 years of bad ball .who the f wants to go through thAT
They had 20 straight years in the playoffs, and now they may have another 10 straight or more. And will be a contender for the foreseeable future. Sounds good to me.
10 empty years f that.i like the way the heat did it competitve just about every year since pat here
4 years as a play-in team is like slow death. False hope/smoke blowing, mediocre team, crappy season ending, disappointed fans (wash, rinse, repeat).
cornett chop that has to hurt look at the size of that guy ouch
With still 3min left in 3rd Spurs already 100+ pts scored. Alien playing with domestic dogs
i think commish looks morelike an alien than wemby
Yup. A little Spock-ish.
usa bros
Wolves all bro starting lineup, 4 are USA.
Not enough Europeans.
LET’S GO SPURS!!
homer wrong team, we cant meet at a spurs parade lol
My team is not in it right now so it’s a moot point
true i root for close games
I meant my Heat team is no in it.
LGS NOW LOL
if wemby stays healthy and plays like this for 10 -15 years he will go down as the best ever.his defense is the best ive ever seen already.
rudys to small for wemby lol put bam on him
who u rather have max or jjj/pelle sm.ill take max hes the most athletic vanilla in nba
I take either one of our players every day of the week and twice on Sunday because I’m always going to take a player who is considerably younger than a 30 year old.
have u been watching max in the pistons series he was #1 reason they won yesterday.pelle jjj aint winning u a game.max is so athletic strong and when on fire a very good player.jjj pelle cant shoot 3s.max more athletic than either although pelles pretty athletic
I like Strus, but he is a career 10ppg, 37% 3p%. But you get enamored with players in one game one quarter one play.
his athleticism off the charts gets lots off rebounds deflections steals and when hes on fire hes on fire when hes not u can still play him cause of his athleticism.best vanilla athlete in nba but he is very streaky
Pelle is an absolute physical beast and Jaquez is solid as well.
they cant shoot though
Strus career fg% 42.7
Pelle 48
Jaquez 49.1
So, Pelle and Jaquez are both better shooters. They did not come in as 3 point shooters, so you can’t compare on that level. Strus came in as a 3p specialist from the beginning.
Strus career EFG 56.6%
Larsson 54.2%
Jaquez 52.9%
Strus career 8.6 FGA and of that 6.3 3PA per game. Almost 3 in every 4 shots Strus takes is a three
Larsson 8 FGA, 2.7 3PA.
Jaquez 9.6 FGA, 2.3 3PA.
Jaquez has the highest FG% because he takes the fewest threes.
Larsson is the best player of the 3, then Strus, then Jaquez imo
Do you feel the same way as Charles Barkeley who said:
“Max Strus played great, but I’m thinking what everybody’s thinking: That’s a pretty man. I would not look him dead in the eyes. I made that mistake with Tom Brady one time.”
u watch the top teams jjj pelle wouldnt get much pt to be honest.on a mediocre heat team yes
Not true. Keep trying.
Jjj yes pelle probably not
Both. Both played well enough to be in rotations, that’s for sure.
minn okc det spurs they play not sure rc.
The keyword in your sentence was “not sure“. That is correct.
Some yes, some no. Depends on the team. Miami was 5th in the NBA in bench scoring in 2025-2026 at 43.8 ppg. Jaquez and Larsson are good 7-8 men in a rotation. Jaquez is a better 6th man and Larsson is a better glue guy starter.
Yes sir
with wemby playing like the best player in nba lets fold up tent and come back in a decade,no way to beat the spurs or okc
If Heat doesn’t do gap years as you said below, why not tank it up and build for the future ala OKC, SA, Houston, Detroit, Charlotte, Orlando etc., etc., etc. Please don’t tell me you like settling for mediocre.
in the nba only 5 guys on ct u get a greek or ss your back to being relevant.i dont have patience for gap years sm.nyk got brunson ind hali okc traded for sga get a better gm
theres to much to do down here sm heat fans are not the dedicated northeast fans their johnny come lately fans the base.they go there as something to do.
Yeah, but they’re clamoring to see several more years of your play-in team. Arena hasn’t been empty and THEY’VE WON ONE PLAYOFF GAME IN THREE YEARS! If they’re showing up for this garbage, then adding some young dynamic players should increase interest, not decrease interest. Of course, adding a high-level player will fill more seats.
its not only fans its tv sets watching.
It’s still the same thing. People are still watching on TV even though we’ve had this situation for three years in a row..
Miami fans are impatient so Riley keeps giving them catfish eggs and calling it caviar. Remember, every dollar the Arisons and Riley save is a dollar in their pockets. Fans? What fans? Now they are putting more money in their pockets by forcing fans to pay to watch the team get its butt whippings in primetime.
53 27 spurs maybe ant wants out.
Trade Herro this summer or by Feb 2027 deadline for an expiring contract, young player and a pick, if possible or as part of a trade for a whale.
If unable to trade him, wait until his contract expires at end of 2026-2027 season and save $33M beginning in 2027-2028.
If unable to trade him, do not re-sign Powell or Wiggins (if he opts out). Use the season to develop young players, including 2026 #13 & #41 picks.
If Wiggins opts in, he can be traded for an expiring contract, a young player and a pick or as part of a trade for a whale.
If Wiggins opts in and Miami obtains a whale without including Wiggins in that trade, he can be used as either a SG or SF or be traded before the Feb 2027 deadline.
If no whale is hooked, Miami should consider 2026-2027 as a gap/soft tank/non-play-in year and look forward to another lottery pick in 2027.
At that point, Miami should have plenty of ammo to go whale hunting for a ss via trade or free agency.
heat dont do gap years sm panthers are 20 miles away mickeys well aware of that .u have a top 5 player out there u get him.u have a top 10 player out there u get him.if u dont get kawhi or greek uh oh we suk for a while
Yeah, these four straight years of play-in, what a great team we are. One playoff victory in three years, but you don’t think that sucks.
with jimmy i enjoyed every game cause i knew we had a chance for jewlery.get a ss rc thats it somwhow someway
Dude, that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone.
Correct. Worse case scenario, let the contract expire.
Herro got money already. Well, at least comparing to the middle working class and not the celebrity lifestyle. But i see his “way out” is to accept a significant pay cut and relegation to the bench to stay in Miami. But that’s not gonna be possible coz Tyler and agent will want $$$$$$$.
As I’ve said before if he wasn’t on the heat idk if he’s still in the league Ala Cam Thomas type player only offense bad on defense nothing else. Herro and his agent know this which is why he fakes injuries plays or plays terrible (2021 season) whenever his name is brought up in trade rumors. Also why he didn’t mind playing 33 games in an extension year. He knows once he leaves here it’s only a matter of time til he goes from team to team or overseas in time
at least dunc doesnt get hurt.gms smarter than some guy here on hhh
Using that logic, it pretty much eliminates the Heat from going after Ja, Kahwi and a few other injury-prone players. If they don’t routinely play at least 65-70 games per year, Miami doesn’t need them.
Achilles, ACLs, back injuries, broken bones or severe sprains, etc. are part of the game and can happen to anyone. But players who are habitually out 25% or more of the time for various aches and pains is something entirely different. They are still paid 100% of their salaries, for doing absolutely nothing (just like Rozier).
pat saw himself as tyler he was wrong.pat was a gritty player.ty is a one on one injured no d player a terrible guy to have on a winning team.
Herro going overseas is truly wild. The worst shooting season of Herro’s career 51.6% EFG, was better than Thomas’ peak, 51.3%.
