Bucks are reportedly acting as if they will have Heat’s pick in draft

At this point, we’re counting the days until the 2026 NBA Draft, which is officially five days away. The Miami Heat own the No. 13 pick, as well as the No. 41 pick. But it most importantly marks the deadline the Milwaukee Bucks set on dealing Giannis Antetokounmpo.

For weeks (and even months/years), the Miami Heat have been haggling the Bucks for their superstar forward. Even though the Bucks are attempting to play hard-ball with their self-imposed deadline (from their owner, mind you), the two-time MVP is expected to be dealt by the draft.

If the Heat did acquire Antetokounmpo, they would be sending their first-round draft pick in the deal. It wouldn’t be made official until the moratorium ends on July 6, though the Heat would essentially be making the pick for Milwaukee.

Neither side has agreed to a deal, clearly. But according to NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Bucks — who also own the No. 10 overall pick — are already acting as if that’s the case.

“League sources say that Milwaukee has very much been carrying itself like a franchise in recent days that expects to have the No. 13 selection as well as its own No. 10 pick,” Fischer’s report read. “The Bucks, of course, can only make a selection at No. 13 if they acquire that pick from Miami as part of an Antetokounmpo trade.”

Understandably so, the Bucks are in the hunt for more first-round draft capital in this year’s draft. Fischer reported Tuesday that Milwaukee is signaling to rival teams that they plan to have “as many as three first-round picks” in next week’s draft.

The Heat only have three tradable first-round picks, including their 13th overall selection. While adding Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and a combination of Pelle Larsson, Kasparas Jakucionis and Nikola Jovic, finding a third first-round pick may be easier said than done.

However, two top-13 picks, at the very least, is a great floor.

Nevertheless, their extensive search for draft capital makes their recent media ploy to push back their deadline even more silly. Under this regime, the Bucks have been abhorrent in the draft. But any chance they have to add cheap, cost-controlled talent post-Giannis should be a priority.

A lot can change over the next five days. What we do know is that Miami won’t leave the dinner table, no matter how small their plate gets, for Antetokounmpo. Who caves first?

News for SM.

The Miami Heat could have more limitations than just protecting Bam Adebayo when working out a potential trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Chang reported Friday for the Miami Herald.
According to Chiang, the Heat “doesn’t want to gut its team and draft capital in a deal.”
“Miami’s front office is apparently only willing go so far in a trade for Antetokounmpo,” Chiang reported.

“The Lakers, Detroit and Brooklyn are teams who could help facilitate a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to the Heat,” Sidery wrote on X/Twitter Friday.

“Detroit has an interest in Tyler Herro, while Los Angeles recently inquired about what it would take for Kel’el Ware. A Giannis to Miami deal could involve five teams.”

Ware has completed only NBA seasons thus far, yet is already an asset many believe could continue his career elsewhere this summer. That isn’t necessarily a bad sign, though, as the Heat’s openness to moving on from the Indiana product makes sense after factoring in the fact that it could help them land the perfect superstar contributor.

What does that mean? It signals that Ware has performed well enough to be viewed as a valuable, long-term asset for a franchise in a potential blockbuster deal. In Sidery’s scenario, the Lakers would receive Ware’s multi-dimensional services and give Doncic a big man with an encouragingly high ceiling.

Ware, a reliable rim-running center who’s elevated his floor spacing chops and made a name for himself as a respectable shot blocker. The 22-year-old averaged 11.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game with the Heat this season, shooting 53.0% from the field and 39.5% from deep.

Acquiring Ware would be a future-driven move, but it could pay dividends for the franchise in an instant-impact sense.

Like many of us, I have said Ware is a solid player with considerable upside. He would be a great addition for the Lakers or any other team that acquires him.

I hate to see young players with potential trades away before the Heat knows exactly what they have. Two players in particular, Ware and Jakucionis.

Maybe not, but I am an optimistic person. I think they both have the potential to be all stars one day. While you appear to be fixated on the past, I’m focusing on the future.

The Heat could be in Milwaukee’s shoes in a couple of years. They could have a disgruntled 33-34-35 year old Giannis with declining skills, increased health issues and less availability on a team containing few young players and draft picks. Miami’s only option then would be to attempt to unload Giannis and recoup whatever young players and draft picks it can get in order to begin a complete long term rebuild.

Right now, Miami has a good young core, a 2026 lottery pick and second rounder (next week). In addition, if it does not make the playoffs again next season, it would be in line for another lottery pick. A young core, two lottery picks, a second rounder and a ton of cap space. Sounds like a formula for success.

Remember, if Miami passes on the trade because of excessive demands by the Bucks, they may not want to trade Giannis at all. If they trade him to a team before the deadline where he does not want to go, they will not be to get a return anything close to what Miami has offered. He could then become a free agent next summer and Miami would be in a position to sign him (or any other quality free agent) outright without giving up young players or draft picks.

PLEASE READ THIS!

The Milwaukee Bucks are in HORRIBLE shape regarding their current roster, payroll and future draft picks. The team’s draft capital and payroll have been heavily negatively impacted by past trades for Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday.

  • It holds first-round picks in only 2026, 2031, and 2032. Furthermore, the picks are subject to pick swaps and outgoing obligations.
  • It holds none of its second round picks 2026-2032.
  • It is obligated to pay Damian Lillard $90M+ ($22,526,603 per year), over the next four seasons, 2026-2027 thru 2029-2030. (Milwaukee waived Lillard in July 2025, stretching the remaining $113 million on his contract over 5 years, to accommodate the signing of free-agent center Myles Turner).
  • It was hoped that stretching Lillard’s salary and bringing in Turner would help the franchise retool their roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo. Obviously, that has failed.
  • It has two current underperforming players/contracts in Miles Turner and Kyle Kuzma, totalling $47M per year.
  • 5 Bucks players have player options in 2026-2027. This includes the team’s #2 scorer, Kevin Porter Jr., who is scheduled to be paid $5.4M in 2026-2027. He will undoubtedly opt out and demand a significant increase in salary.
  • It is very easy to understand why Giannis wants out of Milwaukee. The Bucks have no way to build a contending team around him.
  • It is also easy to understand why the Buck’s owner is so desperate to maximize his draft picks in the Antetokounmpo trade. It is to compensate for his past mismanagement and unwise risks.
  • THE BUCKS OWNER IS NOT IN A POSITION OF STRENGTH! HE IS IN A TERRIBLE NEGOTIATING POSITION…A POSITION OF EXTREME WEAKNESS.
  • THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR RILEY TO GIVE IN. IT IS THE TIME FOR HIM TO HOLD FAST AND MOVE ON IF MILWAUKEE CONTINUES TO DELAY THE PROCESS AND/OR MAKE UNREASONABLE DEMANDS.

I just saw a trade scenario that has a slightly different spin than anything else I have seen. I added the Detroit second round pick as a sweetener, since they have 13 from 2026-2032.

OPTION 1

Miami gets:

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • Bobby Porter

Detroit gets:

  • Tyler Herro

Milwaukee gets:

  • Kel’el Ware
  • Jaime Jaquez
  • Nikola Jovic
  • Ron Holland
  • Caris Levert
  • Miami 2026 #13 pick
  • Miami 2030 pick
  • Miami 2032 pick
  • Detroit 2027 First or Second Round Pick*

(*Detroit has all first round picks and 13 second round picks from 2026-2032)

Under the above scenario, Miami would be able to keep both Larsson and Jakucionis.

Projected Starting Line-up:

  • Mitchell
  • Powell
  • Wiggins
  • Antetokounmpo
  • Adebayo

Projected Second Unit:

  • Jakucionis
  • Gardner
  • Larsson
  • Free agent using MLE (John Collins, Harrison Barnes, etc.)
  • Portis

Reserves:

  • Smith
  • Young
  • Johnson
  • #41 pick
  • 2026 Undrafted Player

OPTION 2

  • Trade Herro to Detroit for Stewart, Holland and a 2027 second round pick (Herro has indicated he is open to be traded to Detroit)

OPTION 3

  • Although it goes against my better judgement, trade Herro, Jovic and 2026 #41 pick for Ja Morant.

With either OPTION 2 OR OPTION 3, Miami will be able to keep all its young players (minus Jovic) and first round draft picks.

Any thoughts?

Depending on who Miami decides to keep, the team may be in a position to obtain a free agent this summer. It would definitely be in a position to acquire a player who could make a difference by next summer. You tolerated mediocrity for the last few years. Is it so difficult to endure one more if there is a path to make Miami a contender by next summer?

It’s just a difference of opinion. Bucks took a big gamble giving away several draft picks for Lillard. They ended up releasing him and owing him $110M+ over 5 years plus having very few picks in the next 6 seasons.

Now Bucks are trying to sell their most valuable asset to acquire as many picks and young players as possible to begin a rebuild. The last 5 years since they won a title have been a complete waste.

Before the 2022-2023 playoffs began, the Miami’s odds of winning the NBA Championship were widely listed at +12500 (or 125 to 1). At some sportsbooks, their odds were even as long as +15000.

MORTGAGING THE FUTURE FOR POTENTIAL SHORT-TERM SUCCESS

For a minute, it appeared as though Miami was catching up to the rest of the NBA and finally going through a youth movement via the draft (Jovic, Jaquez, Ware, Larsson and Jakucionis). When considering this year’s lottery pick and potentially another one next year, the Heat would have been well on its way to becoming one of the NBA’s younger teams.

However, it now appears Miami may trade next week’s #13 lottery pick and 2 future picks, 2 pick swaps, Herro and up to 4 of the team’s youngest players for one 31 year old player (turning 32 later this season) with a 28.5% career 3 pt average and possibly his 31 year old back-up sidekick (Bobby Portis) as well as the two Antetokounmpo emotional support brothers. If this happens, it will be several years before Miami will be able to restock its supply of quality young players.
Miami’s projected 2026-2027 line-up, from what I can tell so far, including players’ ages, are as follows:

  • Mitchell (28)
  • Powell (33)
  • Wiggins (31)
  • Giannis (32)
  • Bam (29)

Average age of starters: 30.6 years of age.

The second unit’s players are anyone’s guess.

Sundayafternoons

I’ll grant you sending Milwaukee three players under what 27 who either have made an all star team, or have all star potential. Along with three draft picks or whatever…

Yeah, sure none of the three are the next big thing, but that’s really solid basketball value. All three have established a floor as quality rotation players, with ceilings as starters on competitive playoff squads.

It gives the impression that Milwaukee wants top 3 picks in consecutive drafts– which won’t even really be allowed anymore or whatever?

My hottests take on all this is, if Milwaukee doesn’t want Herro. Then send them Wiggins and KJ instead. Because with Bam and Giannis on the floor covering for him on defense having Herro’s shot making would play up.

SunManFromDogBone
SunManFromDogBone

For one season. Then what, pay him $40M+ for next 4 seasons?

Sundayafternoons
Sundayafternoons

Kinda depends on what the outcome of the season is?

If Miami is highly competitive in the playoffs, and ya know in the likelihood they lose before the finals, but with maybe some clear areas of improvement that aren’t just on Tyler, then maybe paying him makes sense for the team in that moment.

Maybe that recuperates enough of Tyler’s standing across the league that a sign and trade for some quality assets in return becomes easier to do.

Maybe Tyler gets a taste of playing meaningful games and having a meaningful impact on them and wants to stay in Miami and give the team more flexibility.

Maybe it’s all on Tyler too, and we’re stuck with a sub-par sign and trade, or signing him to a bit too expensive of a contract, or idk the Kings or Nets or Pelicans make him a near max offer and we’re just outta luck.

But having Giannis and Bam behind him on defense is probably a near ideal situation for the rest of his game to shine.

That just isn’t true. And Greek is top 10, but maybe not for long.

Jaquez was 56th in the NBA in scoring. He should he roughly 240 based on your logic.

Pelle 108th.

Both had positive impacts on the court, granted for a bad team, but when they were on, Heat won those minutes.

I get it, you love the idea of a 32 year old former MVP, but your crapping on players of the team you claim to love, while slobbering on guys like Jalen Green…doesn’t make sense.

With Pelle, its seven, and with JJJ its six, not eight.

But, your point is well taken. As good as those guys are, their usage on a playoff team is borderline starter, really more like solid high rotation players. And that distinction matters. Doesn’t mean you hate the players. Just means what you said, these are the greatest athletes in the world, and it’s quite competitive.

And that could be the reason why they are apparently waffling about taking our offer too. The idea about trading Wiggins and keeping Herro is not my favorite, but to get Giannis, that I would do. And I believe the Bucks would take that trade too. It’s a copycat league and certain types of players may not be held in that high of regard right now. Besides, no one wants to pay Herro more than he’s already getting.

And when I say Riley made some big mistakes that are coming back to haunt him, this is the area I have been referring to. There are guys that are hard to move and this keeps happening, messing up our whale hunt. You need an exit strategy for every player you sign to a big contract.

Hopefully, it will still all work out. .

In other words, go all in? Go for broke?

Bout30man

No, not for broke, but if all other aspects of the deal remain the same, changing Wiggins from Herro to make the deal happen makes the most sense as their salaries are close, and even though Wiggins is the better overall player, Herro is younger and I do agree with the idea that Bam and Giannis would mesh with Ty’s skills to still be a formidable team, definitely better than we are now.

I wouldn’t pay Herro anymore, if possible. I’d rather trade Herro but he’s hard to move. Riley gave him too much money already and with his new contract, perhaps it’s not a situation most GM’s would want, having to overpay for a player who was already making a little above what he should be, particularly with his availability issues.

OTOH, the things I said about JJJ and Pelle (and Kaspar), that they are high in the rotation guys (likely 6th or 7th man), is not true of Ty. He is starter level, and if he stays healthy, is still a good player to have, particularly if you can help him on defense, which the Heat could with Giannis.

If Herro is not traded and unwilling to accept a contract based on what I believe is his value – $25m per season, then they should let him play out the current contract to its expiration. He would then be highly motivated to have a great season and bet on himself.

I agree. However, I think Miami will be in a much better position to have a strong team and cap space to bring in a ss a year from now. Now is the time for patience and team building, not a time for impatience or impulsiveness.

It seems that you and others want to push ALL of Miami’s chips into the middle of the table and go for broke in the hope Giannis is the Heat’s savior.

If you are wrong and let’s say Giannis suffers a severe, career altering injury, then what? You know what, Riley will retire and leave Miami and it’s fans holding the bag well into the 2030’s.

And for any naysayer who was *sure* they would opt out and who didn’t accept when I said they would be an interesting team to watch, we are here. ⬇️

Sarr, AD, Dybsantsas (#1 pick), George, Young.
Bench – Coulibaly, Carrington, Johnson, Vukcevic, Champagnie, Whitmore, Riley, and a couple of end of bench types . Definitely no less than play-in, maybe playoffs. Good for them. Probably the best group since Wall/Beal.

I have always made my own judgements. I gather all available information and data from independent sources, reach a conclusion, then make a judgement. I don’t follow trends, or listen to biased opinions. The eye test is one part of the process, not the whole part. You’re happy with your methodology, fine. My methodology (being analytical) has worked very well for me.

I turn here for the latest. I keep thinking the deal will happen at an unusual time like, maybe 11pm. It could be coming anytime now. Is the emphasis on the all, as in All but a done deal? Or, on the but, as in All…but a done deal?

There was a report that other front offices didn’t trust the Bucks. There was another report that said the Bucks were going to keep Giannis past the draft. There was another report the Bucks are operating as if they have the 13th pick.

Like you, I believe it doesn’t make sense to go beyond the draft. Sure, we may pick someone they may like, but we also might pick someone who doesn’t fit their needs or timeline.

Milwaukee already screwed Miami (Riley) once when they swooped in out of nowhere and scooped up Lillard. Now they are trying to screw Miami again by extracting every ounce of blood they can get. By dragging the process out, the Bucks are leaving the Heat in a vulnerable position regarding other possible trade options.

Riley should take a step back and let Giannis put the pressure on Milwaukee to accept Miami’s offer.

In the Lillard debacle of 2023, he was traded September 17, stringing the Heat out the entire summer. The big additions? Josh Richardson and Thomas Bryant. (Jaquez too,to be fair)

In 2014, when they were hung out to dry by LeBron, the additions were Shabazz Napier, Josh McRoberts, and Danny Granger.

In basketball, as in life, you should learn from your past mistakes. THE HEAT CANNOT AFFORD TO MAKE THIS SAME MISTAKE AGAIN! If there is nothing definitive as we enter the draft, move on to other options that will get this team out of play-in-ville.

It’s not going past the draft. If it does then the Bucks FO are a bunch of dopes. Not only are they the ones who wants picks in this loaded draft, there was already a report a week ago about how other FO offices don’t trust them. If they do that they can forget ever working with other teams while these dopes are in charge.

Absolutely! I’m getting flashbacks of the 2023 Portland/Milwaukee fiasco. Riley should know better.

I thought Portland was unreasonable regarding Lillard. That was nothing.

Unless Giannis puts his foot down now and refuses to sign an extension with any team but Miami, Milwaukee will continue dragging this process out trying to milk Riley for all they can get. Neither Milwaukee nor Miami is in the driver’s seat. Giannis is

Only when Gianniis is left with a shell of last year’s Heat team that cannot compete at an elite level, will the light go on for him. He must interject himself in the process right now to prevent Riley, out of desperation, from giving away the ranch. He must do it to save Riley from himself.

You know it’s close to someone getting Giannis with the two latest reports. Yesterday it was the Bucks were going to hold on to him past the draft, which would be the dumbest thing that FO could do, and now we have them operating as if they have the 13th pick.

I do like Carr, so good for them if they take him with the Heat’s pick. 😉

From Evan Sidery of Forbes and other publications, nba reporter since 2017 (no idea).
This is fine except why would Memphis do this?

A potential four-team Giannis Antetokounmpo trade framework featuring the Heat, Bucks, Pistons and Grizzlies:

Miami: Giannis, Bobby Portis, Caris LeVert (TPE)

Milwaukee: Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Isaiah Stewart, Kasparas Jakucionis, Santi Aldama, Nos. 13 + 21, future 1sts : Tyler Herro + No. 32 (this is a copy and paste, but it appears that this last part is what Detroit would receive)

Memphis: Nikola Jovic, Kyle Kuzma, future 2nds

Okay, Memphis has #3 and #16, so may not care about #32. But I guess just more spitballing click bait.

The numbers don’t appear to match up. It looks like Miami is taking in far more salary $85M+ than it is sending out and Milwaukee is taking in far less. Doesn’t Milwaukee also keep their own #10 pick? That is 3 first round picks this year (two of which are lottery) plus future firsts? That seems like quite a big haul for the Bucks at Miami’s expense.

Memphis sending out Aldama plus a pick and taking back Jovic on long term 4 year contract and keeping Ja? Sounds like one big cluster****. I wouldn’t do it. Riley can’t possibly be that desperate!

If the Giannis trade goes through, I heard Bucks are looking at drafting

#10 pick: Yaxel Lendeborg#13 pick: Cameron Carr
Not a bad core when you include:

Bobby Portis (expires 2028)Kyle Kuzma (expires 2027)Kevin Porter Jr (2026-2027 player option)Myles Turner (expires 2029)A.J. Green (expires 2030)Herro (expires 2027)Ware (expires 2028)Jaquez (expires 2027)Jakucionis (expires 2029)
That’s a pretty good start for a rebuild. Kuzma and Herro can probably be traded at deadline, or sooner, for younger players and/or picks .

Looking from a Bucks perspective, that would be enough to make the fans happy and think it was the right thing to do. If I’m not mistaken, the Bucks would also have two more picks from the Miami deal. In fact, their move seems less risky than our side of the deal. But, for us, not taking a shot at acquiring the best whale of all in terms of not just ability, but also in terms of probable useful years, is a risk worth taking. It’s not like we were going to win a championship in the foreseeable future if we didn’t take a chance.

I’m not so opposed to trading for Giannis or trading away Herro to Detroit. I am opposed to overpaying/getting reamed and having to suffer the consequences for years to come. The last thing I want to see is the Heat not being able to assemble a competitive/ elite team, not just a #5 or #6 place playoff team.

So just because i have nothing else to do.

If we eliminate the 4 Bucks you list, which would bring them some players/draft picks, and assuming Herro traded to Detroit, I see:
Ware – C, Yaxel – pf, Jaquez – sf, Carr – sg, Rollins – pg.
Bench – Simms, Dieng, Stewart, Kas, Detroit #21 pick (Cenac, Peat, or Lopez).

Not a bad start to a rebuild along with 2 future first round picks plus their own picks.

The Bucks have had plenty of time to weigh all offers, request more sweeteners, or to decide to keep Giannis (least likely). When the 13th pick is chosen, we may have a better idea if the pick was for them or us. Or there may simply be a deal in place that will be announced, then finalized July 6. Fasten your seat belts.
