How Davion Mitchell became Heat’s ‘head of the snake’

While four of the five Heat starters scored 22-plus points in the Miami Heat’s 140-123 rout over the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this week, the lone exception was perfect — literally.

Miami Heat guard Davion Mitchell finished with 16 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting — with four threes — while dishing 12 assists. The 6-foot-1 guard didn’t have just any double-double, either. Mitchell, 27, had the most efficient double-double in NBA History (min. 5 TSA), posting a 133.3 true-shooting percentage, 2.5 percentage points greater than Jalen Smith’s 130.8 mark he recorded earlier this season.

After the game, Norman Powell and Bam Adebayo weren’t afraid to put a distinct label on Mitchell, who’s having a career season.

Davion Mitchell has become Heat’s ‘head of the snake’:

Mitchell has done everything necessary to become a mainstay in Erik Spoelstra’s rotation since he arrived in February in the five-team Jimmy Butler blockbuster.

But in Spoelstra’s new-look offense, he’s ascended into the team’s “head of the snake,” according to Adebayo and Powell.

“He’s the head of the snake in the energy and effort. We feed off of him,” Powell said. “He’s taking that challenge and doing a hell of a job with that. He has a chip on his shoulder. I’ve been playing against Davion for a long time. Even in the summer, he takes the challenge, wants to guard the best player in pick up and work on his game.

“He’s a student of the game. He’s definitely [first-team All-Defense]. If they don’t have him first-team, something’s wrong.”

“[Davion Mitchell] is the head of the snake,” Adebayo said. “He’s the first crack (on defense) when he’s on the point guard. And then it goes to [Andrew Wiggins] and then to me. Then you got [Tyler Herro] and [Norman Powell] playing the passing lanes. … We’re an active group when we’re all locked in.”

Adebayo went on to say the same about Mitchell offensively, where he’s continued to build on his career season.

“This offense is built for him,” Adebayo said of Mitchell. “We have the No. 1 pace — all of us run, but he’s the head of the snake. When Davion gets the ball up the court, it literally might be 3 dribbles. That puts defenses on their heel, because he can get downhill. And then when the defense collapse, he makes it easy: Stop on two feet and hit the open person.”

Mitchell is averaging 10.0 points plus career highs in assists (7.8) and steals (1.4). The Baylor alum is shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and 40.4 percent from 3-point range. He’s recorded 10 assists five times this season with three double-doubles.

His impact transcends the box score. Mitchell is one of the NBA’s best point-of-attack defenders, where he’s very physical and difficult to screen. Teams also aren’t able to generate early offense and get into their actions as quickly because of his presence. That’s value that isn’t quantifiable in the box score.

The Heat’s two scorers may be right. Mitchell may not be the leading scorer, but he’s shown in more ways than one how he can be the Heat’s “head of the snake” on a nightly basis.
