Heat cannot afford to repeat this same mistake entering the 2026 offseason

MiamI Heat
The Miami Heat will be star-chasing once again this offseason, but they cannot afford to make this same costly mistake. (Mandatory Credit: Tomas Diniz Santos/Getty Images)

There are plenty of Miami Heat games where we commonly refer to them as being “stuck in the mud.” Well, truthfully, that’s been the epitome of their last four seasons, all resulting in play-in bouts.

This year, however, the Heat did not survive the play-in, getting bounced by the Charlotte Hornets. It snapped their six-year postseason streak, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of many. It’s quite apparent that there’s a wide delta between where they are, and where they need to be to compete for a title.

Therefore, this offseason is a big one for them. Currently, Miami is viewed as a potential landing spot for superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. But it cannot afford to make this mistake.

Heat must have a Plan B if they can’t land Giannis:

Miami will star chase until it’s blue in the face; this regime — one of the most respected in the NBA — doesn’t know how to team build any other way. Time after time, they will whale hunt without a plan to not only acquire said star, but to pivot when the plans fall through.

Once again, the Heat are climbing that mountaintop, hoping for a different result. That’s the definition of insanity, although they have one extra first-round pick to offer — their No. 13 overall first-round pick.

Build through the draft:

Miami is playing a dangerous game by chasing Antetokounmpo, one of the league’s best when he’s healthy.

He’s a top-5 player. But Miami is in danger of forking over all of their assets — including their tradable picks — for the 31-year-old superstar.

While the Heat have done a very good job drafting players above their position, they have failed to recognize that modern contenders are built through the draft — not star-laden trades.

Finding a star in the draft is quite difficult, but Miami has one of the best developmental organizations in the NBA. And when they have built up enough ammo in the draft and through other necessary asset management, they’ll be in a much better position to take a large swing for, say, an Antetokounmpo-esque player, or a couple of key missing pieces, that become available.

Heat must nail their MLE:

Regardless of what the Heat’s course of action, they must nail whomever they target with their mid-level exception, which is worth roughly $15 million. They don’t have to spend all of it, but they will need to add more two-way depth to fortify their roster — with or without Antetokounmpo.

We outlined a few targets here. It’s not a deep free agent class, but it’s one that still possesses plenty of quality talent. Specifically, Miami should target a backup big and at least one versatile 3-and-D wing, bolstering their depth, especially if an injury or two pops up.

3 archetypes Miami Heat should prioritize for 2026 NBA Draft
May 23, 2026

At this current juncture, it appears that Giannis Antetokounmpo will not be a member of the Milwaukee Bucks come draft night. And if he is moved, there’s a chance that he’s on the Miami Heat, almost certainly stripping them of their No. 13 overall selection. Miami would still be making a pick — but for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Until that moment comes — if it does — we will be operating with the assumption that it keeps its pick. The Heat will own two picks — No. 13 and No. 41 — in the 2026 NBA Draft, which is exactly one month away. What should they be prioritizing? Here are three specific archetypes.

  • A two-way wing (with size):
  • A two-way guard who can drive offense:
  • A versatile, high-energy backup big:

If Miami trades for Giannis and loses its #13 pick, what will be the Heat’s new priorities?

Wow, that is so insightful. You said a while back they wouldn’t be in the wcf when I predicted Spurs Thunder in the wcf. I also predicted the Knicks coming out of the east. I did not think the Cavs would be in the ecf.

Just read yet another rumor that the Heat may offer Powell a 3 year, $65m contract with a team option on the third year. If he is, in fact, re-signed, that is a team friendly deal.

Jovic gets $62.4 for not doing Jack. Powell is worth more than $21M and change per year and Jovic is worth far less than $15M+.

Speaking of contracts, I think Heat should offer Jaquez and Larsson contract extensions now, before their values go up. It would be easier to swallow the costs if Jovic was traded together with Herro to Detroit for Beef Stew, Holland and 2027 pick.

  • Jaquez: 4 years $72M. ($18M per year)
  • Larsson: 4 years $62.4M. ($15.6M per year, same as Jovic)

The rotation, with Herro/Jovic trade could be:

Mitchell, Powell, Larsson, Bam, Ware
Jakucionis, Holland, Jaquez, Jovic, Beef Stew
2026 lottery pick, 2026 second round pick, Smith, Gardner, Young

That team would have potential, especially with another lottery pick in 2027, a free agent or two and any other pick(s) acquired along the way.

I don’t know, but I understand OKC may not be renewing his contract because of cost $28.5M. They have JDub $41.5M and Chet $41.5M beginning 5 year extensions.

Shai will also begin his 5 year extension and will be making $40.8M next season, $61M in 2027/2028 and $75.6M in the final year.

Heat cant afford him either.

Don’t Bam and Giannis play the same position, PF? I know Bam no longer wants to play C.

In Milwaukee, Giannis had Lopez and Portis at C and then Turner and Portis. Who does Miami have to play C if Bam no longer wants to? Who is Heat’s back-up if Bam does agree to play C?

Again, let’s do the math:

Herro = (2019) #13 Lottery pick

Jaquez Jr.= (2023 original: No. 18) frequently jumps into the Top 10 in re-drafts

Ware= (2024 original: No. 15) rises to lottery pick (around No. 10) in re-drafts

Jakucionis = (2025 original: No. 20) regularly projects as a Late Lottery pick

Lottery pick equivalents:

1) Herro
2) Jaquez
3) Ware
4) Jakucionis
5) 2026 lottery pick
6) 2027 lottery pick (Heat would lose to Charlotte if they make playoffs)

Plus
7) 2030 first round pick
8) 2032 first round pick
2 pick swaps

Now, please explain to me why Miami should give up the equivalent of 6 lottery picks, two additional picks and 2 pick swaps for a 31 year old who has played an average of 62.3 games per year since 2019-2020?

If Miami does go through with such a trade, Milwaukee will need to change its name to the Milwaukee Heat North.

You just don’t get it! Show me one comment I’ve made that says I don’t want Giannis or don’t recognize his greatness. I NEVER SAID ANY SUCH THING. What I’ve said is I don’t want to gut the entire team and every available asset to get him. I feel that way, SM feels that way, and the writer of this article feels that way. There are 2 valid ways to look at this issue. I’m a long term thinker. It has served me very well. You’re a short term thinker. I see consequences, you don’t.

A player like that does not come available very often. But I also refuse to believe that the team will be any worse than it is now next season and beyond if we don’t do that deal, and we have a chance to be a contender again if the right moves are made and we don’t give up all of our draft picks and young players.

Don’t get your panties all in a bunch, but I just read another article in allucanheat:

Heat may be reliving Damian Lillard nightmare with Giannis pursuitThe Heat are setting themselves up for failure.

The Miami Heat’s Giannis Antetokounmpo pursuit could end a lot like the Damian Lillard saga, and that would force the fan base to relive some very unnecessary nightmares.

Miami lost out on Lillard when a “mystery” team, the Milwaukee Bucks, jumped in and pried him out of their reach. The same could happen in the team’s pursuit of Giannis this summer, as the Boston Celtics are emerging as a very real threat.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Heat and Celtics are the two trade destinations that most intrigue Giannis. Theoretically speaking, the Celtics could be a dark horse threat not only because of the lure of Jayson Tatum, but also the fact that they could flip Jaylen Brown to a third team and unlock even more assets to send Milwaukee’s way.

Lillard didn’t have leverage over where he was traded, because he signed a longterm extension before being traded. Milwaukee traded for him with 4 years still left on his contract.

Giannis situation is different, he has an expiring contract and can decide which team he signs with next offseason.

I think this guy is reading my posts. Excerpt from allucanheat article:
Heat fans just got a Giannis update they didn’t really want to hearIt’s a waiting game now.

The reality is that the Heat are taking a very big risk this summer by putting all their eggs in the Giannis basket. Because if they falter on this front, the Heat will be left with no clear-cut plan B. The team’s only hope is that the Giannis situation is settled at the NBA Draft, giving the front office the ability to pivot toward other pursuits before the offseason fully arrives.

But, especially with the way this entire saga has unraveled, there’s no guarantee that will happen.

TheBigRagu

If Miami can’t land Giannis with all the tradeable assets they have, the front office needs to be forced out. Nick Arison needs to take charge here.

Desperate people do desperate things. That means losing 3-4 rotation players (all first round picks), 2026 #13 pick, losing 2027 pick to Charlotte if Heat makes the playoffs, then losing at least 2 more first round picks, plus possibly a pick swap or 2 for one single player?

Either that or select #13 and #41 in June, select another lottery player in 2027 if Heat doesn’t make playoffs, trade Herro and others for draft picks and look to sign one or more 2027 free agents. Hmm? That’s a tough one. NOT!

2015Heat
2015Heat

Adding Giannis would solve Miami’s main problems – lack of rim pressure on offense, lack of defense and defensive rebounding when Bam leaves the game. A Giannis/Bam frontcourt is an overnight contender in the East, probably below NYK and Indiana, around Detroit and Boston in odds to win the EC next year, depending on all the other moves those teams make.

Miami has the best on court situation for Giannis (established veteran leader in Bam, defensive foundation, ability for Giannis to be the primary on ball scorer on offense), and the best trade offer for MIL – particularly the #13 pick.

Boston makes some sense on court, although Tatum is already the #1 option there.

Cleveland doesn’t make sense with Harden and Mitchell backcourt that doesn’t play defense and takes turns on offense/ stands around without the ball. Giannis would be the third option there because of the backcourts inability to play off ball, vs the center of the offense in Miami.

Maybe I’m alone on this island, but I don’t think Bam and Giannis work offensively.

Giannis isn’t a player using screens constantly. Neither are consistent 3 point shooters. You ideally want them both in the paint on half court offense, but then it’s just drawing more defenders to them both.

I think defensively it’d be potentially awesome, offensively, I’m not so sure.

That’s a fair point, saw Zach Lowe and Jason Timpf say that also. I don’t agree, I think the example is the Heat offense with Butler and Bam. Both shot very few 3s (Butler took around only 2 3PA per game and most years shot <30%, Bam didn’t take 3s at all) and the Heat still had a few years with top 10 offense.

Both Butler and Bam scored around half or more of their points in the paint, and Butler shot 8-9 FTA per game

Giannis led the NBA in points in the paint at 18.7 last year, plus shot 10 FTA per game

Both Giannis and Bam can do everything – pass, dribble, cut etc – on offense. I think the real synergy is having Giannis as the #1 scorer on an offense built around him, Bam covering for him on defense. There’s no team Giannis can join like that – Boston has a great team/system defense – but Miami with Bam is the team with the best individual defender he can join imo.

The Heat need draft and develop a super star, not trade for one.

SGA wasn’t drafted by OKC, but he was developed there, along with a number of other players.

Tatum and Brown drafted and developed.

Jokic and Murray home grown.

Giannis drafted and developed – Middleton, developed.

Klay, Steph and Draymond – drafted and developed.

In the last 9 years – only 2 champions have been built through free agency and trades for established stars. The Lakers and Raptors. The rest – built on the backs of developing young players.

I know having a top draft pick makes it easier to find a NBA star, but there are plenty in the league, who weren’t top 5. Giannis was the 15th pick, Jokic 41st, Shai 11th, Kawhi 15th, Steph 7th, Brunson 33rd, Mitchell 13th.

Miami could and should try to change it’s trajectory through the draft.

Heat almost always pick the best player available, but no player with the exception of Wade never developed in superstar. Other stars came in Miami via trade.

Maybe this is a biggest problem with Riley. He had a lot of success with whale hunting, but times changes. It seems that he doesn’t understand that.

But ingredients of a champion teams are:

-get the best player you can via trade.
-keep you picks, and draft smart.
-keep your young players and get out of them everything you can.
-fill the holes with good, experiences, and cheap vets.
-a lot of luck.

For Heat that means:
-go after Giannis
-try to keep a 2026 pick and draft a future superstar
-dont trade good young players, trade only bad ones.
-sign only vets on veteran minimums… avoid the type of Harden, even Wiggins and Powell.
-pray to every God there is.

Its just that simple.

The league was different IMO in the 1990’s and 2000’s. Stars often changed teams. Barkley, Rodman, O’Neal, Zo, KG, LeBron, etc.

We are seeing less movement with the modern NBA rules. Players want the bag, and staying with the same team, is the best way to get paid the most.

Riley needs to change, I don’t trust that he will, but he needs to. Whale hunting isn’t going to bring a Parade to Miami. Whale hunting is going to kill the future for a year as an also ran playoff team.

You need everything comes together. There is not much chance that any young player in the team will become a superstar. There is a lot of good to great players in this years draft, but no future superstars. So the only way is trade to get your superstar.

The team has a rare opportunity to get one an actually in position, to not sold out the team for that. So the time is now IMO.

I mean I’d say the same thing about Giannis. You need everything to come together. With Giannis they aren’t the favorites in the east or the NBA. With Giannis they’ll have no draft picks for 4 years (counting this year), and likely give up some pick swaps too.

Throw in a young player or two – and I’m all for taking my chances in the draft.

It’s been 5 years since Giannis was the dominate force behind the Bucks title. Thats forever in an athletes career.

Also I’d say – much to my earlier point – the clippers, nuggets and Bucks didn’t think they were drafting MVP’s when they picked Shai, Jokic and Giannis…but they did. You never know who’s gonna be a super star that the scouts missed.

My opinion is, that most of ss are somehow different players, whether physically (like Wemby) or they can play position they shouldn’t (Giannis, Wemby again, Luka, Jokic, Cade…). There are exemptions, like Curry, SGA for example, of course, with their main qualities less visible.

I dont see much of that in this draft. Guards are guards, wings are wings, centers are centers. Good ones, but I woudnt call any of them alien or something similar.

Zachary Kap
Zachary Kap

Look at the drafts.

Herro for all his flaws, was probably the second best option left. And better than a number of guys in front of him.

Precious Achiuwa was a bad pick, in terms of good players left – Maxey, McDaniel, etc, but he’s still in the league, when a number of players ahead of him aren’t.

Jaime – there is maybe 1 player picked after him you could make a case for.

Kel’el Ware – it’s probably too early to say, but right now, he’d be drafted ahead of a number of players that were picked in front of him. Maybe that’ll change.

My point is – for the most part the Heat FO have drafted well in the spots they have. We can talk about the Justice Winslow pick or the Michael Beasley pick, but that’s over a decade ago.

Overall Miami front office has done a good job of drafting pieces that are better than their draft position. The lack of draft picks and refusal to ever ‘tank’ are the problems.

I feel about the same. I have listed players that were chosen just before or after our picks that were worse or completely out of the league. You can point the finger at every GM where a player chosen after their pick turned out to be significantly better. Every GM passed at least once on Jokic.

With the exception of Jovic, Miami’s picks since Precious have been projected to be selected higher in re-drafts (Jaquez, Ware, Larsson, Jakucionis), The problem is Miami has missed out on lottery picks since 2019. There is a direct correlation between a team’s mediocrity and year after year picking outside the top 14.

Make good selections with Lottery picks in 2026 & 2027 and second rounder in 2026

Get the maximum trade value in young players and draft picks in return for players who are not part of Miami’s future plans. (Bundle Herro and Jovic in a trade if possible)

Sign Jaquez and Larsson to long term/team friendly contract extensions

Allow the rookies and veterans the entire 2026-2027 season to obtain playing time in order to expedite their developments.

Look for a ss (clutch player) to bring in after the draft in the summer of 2027. See attached list of 2027 free agents.

The core players I see Miami keeping are:

  • Bam
  • Ware
  • Mitchell
  • Jaquez
  • Larsson
  • Jakucionis
  • Gardner
  • 2026 lottery pick (Yaxel Lendeborg, Brayden Burries, Labaron Philon, Cameron Carr?)
  • 2027 lottery pick ?
  • 2026 second round pick (Tarris Reed, Baba Miller, Floyd Bidunga, Milan Momcilovic?)

You always say the GM has to give the star whatever he wants, but forget that he brought in Lowry, money that could have been much better spent on a different player. In fact, if he didn’t make that mistake placating Butler, we would’ve had Dragic at pg and Precious as backup center. And we’d have avoided the Rozier debacle.

Okay, so I’m saying Riley did by signing Lowry to that bad contract, so don’t blame him for doing exactly what you are saying – to give your star anything he wants. As a result, he couldn’t sign a good backup center. Blame Butler on that.

Giannis and Jokic are the top FA in 2027 and Jokic has said he wants to stay in Denver

I agree with you on that this infatuation with the 2027 free agents class is a mystery. Every top player on that list is 30 plus Kawhi harden I think Mitchell is the youngest star level player on that list and he’ll be 31 when the 27/28 season starts. He’s also infatuated with the gap year bs spewed by this front office

It’s about having the cap space in 2027 to sign a max contract like Giannis, Jokic, Mitchell etc in free agency, which the Heat are on track to have.

If Giannis does actually want to go to Miami and Milwaukee doesn’t trade him, they risk losing him for nothing in free agency next year because Miami can sign him into cap space. Other teams like the Lakers have the same plan. LA has only two players Luka and Vanderbilt under contract right now in 2027, same as Miami with Bam and Jovic

Giannis is also over 30 so what under 30 ss are you thinking of trading for Ant, Luka, Cade, Haliburton?

After adding Powell and Fonteccio last offseason, I spent all of season calling the Heat “3-day old leftovers”. They scored a bunch of points, had a couple winning streaks, and in the end they were the first team bounced from the JV playoffs.

Agree that the Heat need to make a big move this offseason. Everything else is just details. I can’t watch another year of Tyler, Bam, and some promising young guys. Trade Tyler for Bam or Kyrie or trade a bunch of draft picks or whatever. Just give me something different to look at. I’m tired of watching this 10th place team

I agree with this, tired of this team trotting out bam as an untouchable and this love fest for herro who only played 70 games once in his career.

Something drastic needs to happen whether it be trading bam or pat or spo stepping down/up from their current position

I am willing to give Spo and Riley one more year. They’ve earned it. But they can’t keep trotting out this same play-in team every year and expect different results. If they go into next season with minor tweaks to the same Bam/Tyler roster that has never gotten past the first round in three years without Jimmy, I will stop defending them. Maybe another year before I start suggesting they go. They’ve just had too much success, some of it pretty recently, for me to think that they’re the problem. But this team has to do something, because it was stale last year. By next year it’s going to start getting rotten.

Knicks have the best starting 5 in the NBA. Brunson, O.G., Bridges, Hart and Townes. Giannis and Bam can’t beat that. There, I said it. Just imagine how good Knicks would be with Giannis. Forgetaboutit.

You say that today. Then the Finals happen and a guy or two on the Knicks struggle and it’s lets trade them today city. They had the same lineup last year. They happen to make the Finals this time. But for today they are the best 5 in the east.

Name a starting 5 that is better. I’ll wait.

NYK as of now should be favorite in the East next year but Haliburton/Nembhard/Nesmith/Siakam/Zubac could be better, depending on Haliburton’s return

Detroit and Boston could make big moves to improve this offseason

And a Bam/Giannis team would be right there – Giannis is still the best player in the conference

Could be better? I asked to name a starting 5 better than NY right now. You can’t.

I would say last year okc finals starters of sga, jdubb, dort, chet, and hartenstein. I would give the slight edge to them cuz they all 2 way players. But jdub hurt, so edge to NY for now.

This is preaching to the choir of rc, sm, hhh4l, and others here. And many will not like this article, will provide counterpoints, and refuse to accept that this approach may be the best approach for the team and long term success.

Giannis is fools gold. I hope Riley doesn’t turn out to be the fool. I hope he does not make the moves of a desperate man. If opponents smell blood in the water and see signs of desperation, they will take the opportunity to pounce and exploit the situation.

Of all the blockbuster trades made since 2020 (Luka/Anthony Davis, Donovan Mitchell, Kevin Durant (twice), Rudy Gobert, Kyrie Irving, Trae Young, Desmond Bane, Paul George, James Harden, Bradley Beal, etc.), not a single one has resulted in the receiving team winning an NBA championship. Most teams didn’t even make it to the conference championships. Furthermore, several of the players missed considerable time due to injuries after the trades.

This is the only approach Heat haven’t tried in years. Riles and co seems hard-headed to do and go their way. Yep, definition of insanity…maybe they’d be better off called Miami Insanity. I’ll work on that logo

Yup. Stubborn.

  • Why didn’t Heat trade for a big to share the load with Bam and Ware? That alone probably cost the team 5 games.
  • “Small ball” is so passé.
  • How many years has it taken to finally figure out second round picks have a better likelihood of success than unsigned players.
  • Why weren’t Butler, Herro, Duncan, Wiggins and Powell traded at their peak values?
  • Why is there never a Plan B when the annual Plan A is not feasible?
  • Why insist on playing Jovic after it was apparent to everyone that his head and his game were all f’d up. Why wasn’t he sent down to Sioux Falls for “seasoning”?
  • Why was Ware benched so much when it is obvious to all that he needs more consistent playing time in order to expedite his development?

Inquiring minds want to know.

The answer to all those questions is the team is being ran like it’s still in the 2010s instead of 2020s. And until Pat is gone Mickey sells nothing will change

I agree. The Heat ownership and management remind me of the Phoenix Suns 10 years ago. It wasn’t until they changed ownership, GM and coaches that they started winning. They reached finals in 2021. Their problem was making poor trade decisions such as Beal and Durant.
